Dating Violence All Too Common Among Teens | The Pulse

She was attracted to his smile and his personality, but?what seemed like a happy relationship quickly escalated into an abusive situation. Anna, whose name is being changed by The Pulse to protect her privacy, said that about two months in to the relationship at the young age of 13, she started noticing problems.
?He would take out his aggression on me in the forms of mental, sexual and physical abuse,? Anna said.
Dating violence has become an all too common occurrence among teens and young adults. Nearly 1.5 million high school students a year experience some form of physical abuse from a dating partner, according to loveisrespect.org, a website based on raising awareness of dating violence and abuse.
Anna, now 20 and an Indian Trail Academy graduate, was in the relationship for two years and had a difficult time breaking it off.
?Every time we would break up, he would come back and feed me a bunch of lies about his feelings towards me. If I didn?t take him back he would physically abuse me,? she said.
?I was finally able to end the relationship by changing my phone numbers and not letting him know where I was staying.?
Abusive relationships have become more frequent, with women being the most common victim. One in five women who have experienced abuse say that the first time they experienced the violence was between the ages of 11 and 17, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
?Unfortunately, most of my friends and family?stopped speaking with me. My friends did so because of his influence on them. My family didn?t like him either, so they stopped contact with me,? Anna said.
Typically the abuser in a relationship will try to isolate their victim from their family and friends in order to gain more control. Self-esteem plays a big role in abusive relationships, for both the abuser and their victim.
?Victims who have experienced abuse in their relationships often stop taking proper care of themselves,? said Nancy Hofstetter, the domestic violence program coordinator at the Kenosha-based Women and Children?s Horizons, a non-profit organization that provides support, education, healing, and training to victims of sexual and domestic violence/abuse.
?Likewise, abusers also suffer from self-esteem issues. They are often controlling for the very reason that they don?t feel good about themselves,? Hofstet- ter said.
Young adults are the most common victims of dating violence. Rachel, whose name has also been changed, is another Indian Trail teen who experi- enced similar violence in her relationship. She was 14, he was 15, when the abuse started.
?He made all of these restrictions on me. I couldn?t talk to certain people, text them or even be around them. If I didn?t listen, he would lose it. He made me lose a lot of my friends because of it,? Rachel said.
?It was choosing between my friends and him, and no matter how much I wanted to choose them, I really didn?t have a choice but to choose him.?
Although most relationships start out without any problems, there are many warning signs that may appear early on. Behaviors such as cheating, isolating the victim from their loved ones, and trying to gain control of all aspects of their lives are a few ways that abusers assert authority over their partners.
?Isolating victims from family, friends, jobs and community resources are big ways that abusers tend to try to gain power and control over a person,? Hofstetter said.
The first step in breaking off an abusive relation- ship is to understand what is happening.
?If you are feeling abused, break contact with the abuser. Do not stay with them because you ?love? them,? Anna said. ?It is not love, it is fear of what they will do to you or say to you.?
?When it comes your time, you will know the difference between love and fear,? Anna said. ?Eventually the right person will come along and make you happy. You will find true love.?

East Coasters warned to stay home as blizzard nears
As a menacing and powerful blizzard takes aim at the East Coast, airlines have canceled thousands of flights and some cities are bluntly telling their residents: Don't travel if you don't have to.
?I want to stress that the best thing everyone can do Friday and Saturday is to stay home. Stay off the roads, stay safe,"said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
The National Weather Service is advising Bostonians not to travel after noon on Friday, his office pointed out.

Nervous fliers monitored the weather and scrambled to change plans as airlines pre-emptively canceled more than 1,800 flights in New York and Boston alone, according to FlightStats.com.
?This is going to be a monster storm,? warned TODAY meteorologist Al Roker. He expected up to a foot of snow to fall in New York City over the weekend, and more than two feet in Boston.
AAA urged travelers to be aware of the hazards of winter driving and to keep up with the changing weather conditions.

"As the storm develops, if conditions are poor and you can avoid traveling on the roadways, do," said AAA spokeswoman Heather Hunter.
"We will be keeping an eye on the storm and helping any of our travelers out there."
The system has already affected Chicago?s O?Hare International, where snow and ice delayed arriving flights by more than two hours at one point on Thursday afternoon. More than 80 flights scheduled to depart from the airport were canceled, according to FlightAware.com.
Airlines and airports in the storm?s path were bracing for its impact.
?We?re monitoring the weather system closely and will adjust our operations accordingly,? said Allison Steinberg, a spokeswoman for JetBlue Airways.
Like most carriers, the airline is giving travelers the chance to reschedule their flights without paying any change and cancellation fees. (For a full list, scroll down to the bottom of the article.)
Delta Air Lines urged its passengers to take advantage of the waivers.
?Delta is closely monitoring conditions along the storm's forecast path and encourages customers to consider moving up, postponing or re-routing their travel to avoid possible inconvenience from expected flight delays,? the carrier said in a statement.
Southwest Airlines warned its passengers that flights could be ?delayed, diverted, or canceled.?
Meanwhile, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced it is deploying extra personnel and taking all possible measures to handle any wintry conditions that may develop at JFK International, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International.
The agency noted that its ?winter weather arsenal? includes more than 200 pieces of snow and ice equipment at the airports, including ?melters that can liquefy up to 500 tons of snow an hour? and plows that can clear snow at 40 mph.
Port Authority staff will work around-the-clock in 12-hour shifts during the most severe storms, officials said.

- American Airlines passengers traveling to, through or from Boston, New York, Montreal and more than 10 other airports can change their plans for free.
- Delta Air Lines? policy covers more than two dozen airports.
- JetBlue Airways will waive change and cancel fees and fare differences for travel to and from a dozen airports.
- Southwest Airlines passengers traveling to, through or from Boston, Newark, and several other cities are eligible to reschedule their flights for free.
- United Airlines' policy covers more than 30 airports.
- US Airways has also relaxed its change-fee policies.

Euro zone economy should recover later in the year: ECB's Draghi
FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Economic activity in the euro area should gradually recover later in 2013 but there are more negative risks than positive ones, European Central Bank President Mario Draghi said on Thursday.
The euro zone economy contracted in the second and third quarters of last year, meeting the technical definition of recession, and the downturn is expected to have deepened in the fourth quarter.
"The economic weakness in the euro area is expected to prevail in the early part of 2013," Draghi told a news conference after the ECB left its main interest rate unchanged at 0.75 percent.
"Later in 2013, economic activity should gradually recover, supported by our accommodative monetary policy stance, the improvement in financial market confidence... as well as a strengthening of global demand," he said.
Draghi's outlook for the year was similar to the one he gave a month ago.

Conferences: Publication, Communication, Sanction - Bertrand ...

A healthy discussion is taking place in the computer science community on our publication culture. It was spurred by Lance Fortnow?s 2009 article [1]; now Moshe Vardi has taken the lead to prepare a report on the topic, following a workshop in Dagstuhl in November [2]. The present article and one that follows (?The Waves of Publication?)? are intended as contributions to the debate.
One of the central issues is what to do with conferences. Fortnow had strong words for the computer science practice of using conferences as the selective publication venues, instead of relying on journals as traditional scientific disciplines do. The criticism is correct, but if we look at the problem from a practical perspective it is unlikely that top conferences will lose their role as certifiers of quality. This is not a scientific matter but one of power. People in charge of POPL or OOPSLA have decisive sway over the careers (one is tempted to say the lives) of academics, particularly young academics, and it is a rare situation in human affairs that people who have critical power voluntarily renounce it. Maybe the POPL committee will see the light: maybe starting in 2014 it will accept all reasonable papers somehow related to ?principles of programming languages?, turn the event itself into a pleasant multi-track community affair where everyone in the field can network, and hand over the selection and stamp-of-approval job to a journal such as TOPLAS. Dream on; it is not going to happen.
We should not, however, remain stuck with the status quo and all its drawbacks. That situation is unsustainable. As a single illustration, consider the requirement, imposed by all conferences, that having a paper pass the refereeing process is not enough: you must also register. A couple of months before the conference, authors of accepted papers (at least, they thought their paper was accepted) receive a threatening email telling them that unless they register and pay their paper will not be published after all. Now assume an author, in a field where a conference is the top token of recognition, has his visa application rejected by the country of the conference ? a not so uncommon situation ? and does not register. (Maybe he does not mind paying the fee, but he does not want to lie by pretending he is going to attend whereas he knows he will not.) He has lost his opportunity for publication and perhaps severely harmed this career. What have such requirements to do with science?
To understand what can be done, we need to analyze the role of conferences. In an earlier article? [3] I described four ?modes and uses? of publication: Publication, Exam, Business and Ritual. From the organizers? viewpoint, ignoring the Business and Ritual aspects although they do play a significant role, a conference has three roles: Publication, Communication and Sanction. The publication part corresponds to the proceedings of the conference, which makes articles available to the community at large, not just the conference attendees. The communication part only addresses the attendees: it includes the presentation of papers as well as all other interactions made possible by being present at a conference. The sanction part (corresponding to the ?exam? part of the more general classification) is the role of a renowned conference as a stamp of approval for the best work of the moment.
What we should do is separate these roles. A conference can play all three roles, but it can also select two of them, or even just one. A well-established, prestigious conference will want to retain its sanctioning role: accepted papers get the stamp of approval. It will also remain an event, where people meet. And it may distribute proceedings. But the three roles can also be untied:
- Publication is the least critical, and can easily be removed from the other two, since everything will be available on the Web. In fact the very notion of proceedings is quickly becoming fuzzy: more and more conferences save money by not distributing printed proceedings to attendees, sometimes not printing any proceedings at all; and some even spare themselves the production of a proceedings-on-a-stick, putting the material on the Web instead. A conference may still decide to have its own proceedings, or it might outsource that part to a journal. Each conference will make these decisions based on its own culture, tradition, ambition and constraints. For authors, the decision does not particularly matter: what counts are the sanction, which is provided by the refereeing process, and the availability of their material to the world, which will be provided in any scenario (at least in computer science where we have, thankfully, the permission to put our papers on our own web sites, an acquired right that our colleagues from other disciplines do not all enjoy).
- Separating sanction from communication is a natural step. Acceptance and participation are two different things.
Conference organizers should not be concerned about lost revenue: most authors will still want to participate in the conference, and will get the funding since institutions are used to pay for travel to present accepted papers; some new participants might come, attracted by more interaction-oriented conference styles; and organizers can replace the requirement to register by a choice between registering and paying a publication fee.
Separating the three roles does not mean that any established conference renounces its sanctioning status, acquired through the hard work of building the conference?s reputation, often over decades. But everyone gets more flexibility. Several combinations are possible, such as:
- Sanction without communication or publication: papers are submitted for certification through peer-review, they are available on the Web anyway, and there is no need for a conference.
- Publication without sanction or communication: an author puts a paper on his web page or on a self-publication site such as ArXiv.
- Sanction and communication without publication: a traditional selective conference, which does not bother to produce proceedings.
- Communication without sanction: a working conference whose sole aim is to advance the field through presentations and discussions, and accepts any reasonable submission. It may be by invitation (a kind of advance sanction). It may have proceedings (publication) or not.
Once we understand that the three roles are not inextricably tied, the stage is clear for removal for some impediments to a more effective publication culture. Some, not all. The more general problem is the rapidly changing nature of scientific publication, what may be called the concentric waves of publication. That will be the topic of the next article.
