A military conflict between China and Japan is looming, with neither willing to back down over a disputed chain of islands, one of China?s leading foreign policy experts has warned.
The spat over the Diaoyu or Senkaku islands has escalated dramatically in the past month with violent protests in China. But with a national election approaching in Japan, and a change of leadership in China, politicians on both sides have refused to step back from the brink, afraid of appearing weak.
?There is a danger of China and Japan having a military conflict,? said Yan Xuetong, one of China?s most influential foreign policy strategists, and a noted hawk. ?I do not see either side making concessions. Both sides want to solve the situation peacefully, but neither side can provide the right approach.?
He warned that unless one side backed down, there could be a repeat of the Falklands conflict in Asia.
?Generally speaking, according to the theory of international relations, unless one country makes concessions to the other, the escalation of a conflict between two countries will not stop until there is a military clash, like between the UK and Argentina,? he said.
He said that China was tolerant with smaller powers. ?But the case of Japan is different. There is history between us. Japan is a big power. It regards itself as a regional, and sometimes a world power. So China can very naturally regard Japan as an equal. And if we are equal, you cannot poke us. You cannot make a mistake,? he said.
Yan is the dean of international relations at Tsinghua university, the elite college that schooled both China?s president, Hu Jintao, and his likely successor, Xi Jinping. He is also one of China?s representatives to the Council of Security Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific, a non-governmental body that coordinates security in the region.
Chinese and Japanese diplomats have met this week for talks over the crisis, but no agreement has been reached.
Yesterday (Thursday), a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry attacked Yoshihiko Noda, the Japanese prime minister, for telling reporters at the United Nations that the islands belonged to Japan.
Noda said: ?There are no territorial issues as such. Therefore, there cannot be any compromise that represents a retreat from this position.?
A Chinese foreign ministry statement in reply said: ?China is strongly disappointed and sternly opposes the Japanese leader?s obstinacy regarding his wrong position on the Diaoyu Islands issue.?
In the balance is some pounds 216?billion of bilateral trade. Last year, exports to China accounted for three per cent of the Japanese economy.
Several Japanese businesses on the Chinese mainland have had to shut down because of the crisis. Nissan, which relies on the Chinese market for as much as 25 per cent of its revenues, has closed until October 7 after demand for its cars plummeted.
All Nippon Airways said 40,000 reservations had been cancelled on flights between China and Japan from this month to November.
Yan predicted that if there was a military confrontation, the United States would not intervene physically.
?I do not think they will send soldiers to fight against the People?s Liberation Army,? he said. ?They [the US] will be involved, but they can be involved in many different ways, providing intelligence, ammunition, political support, logistical help and so on.?
He expected whoever wins the US presidential election to continue to toughen policy on China. ?In terms of the economy, China and the US are partners. But in terms of security, they are rivals. American hegemony is based on military capability and the military gap with China. When China narrows that gap, it will scare the US,? he said.
He added that China increasingly needed to change the ideology that guides its foreign policy, namely to focus on the economy and not take a leading role in international relations.
?We have reached the point where China needs to seriously consider having a new policy consistent with its international status,? he said. ?I do not know when it will happen, but it will not be too long.?

Sharp is making "adequate volumes" of displays it is known to supply for Apple's new iPhone5, a company executive said, indicating that a possible bottleneck in supplies of screens may have eased.
Analysts had blamed a shortfall in supplies of display for leaving Apple with too few iPhones to meet burgeoning demand at its launch this month.
At the end of Aug., three weeks before the new iPhone went on sale, Sharp, which was supposed to be mass producing at its Kameyama plant in central Japan, had fallen behind schedule, a source earlier told Reuters.
Sharp, the source said, was struggling to improve low production yields, raising the question of whether Apple would be prepared to sweeten financial incentives to secure an acceleration of production.
Apple also buys screens from Japan Display and Korea's LG Display.
Apple began offering the iPhone?5 on Sept. 21, selling over 5 million in the first three days, topping the iPhone 4S, which sold more than 4 million units in its first weekend. On the fourth day, Apple said it had run out of its initial supply and many pre-orders were scheduled to go out in Oct.
"The iPhone 5's 4-inch low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) touch-panel display with in-panel switching (IPS) is exceptionally difficult to produce at high yields," Deutsche Securities analyst Yasuo Nakane said in a report on Sept. 14.
Nakane estimates iPhone screen capacity at Japan Display and LG Display at eight million a month each, and at six million at Sharp. Displays for Apple's first lot of new iPhones likely came from only LG and Japan Display, Nakane added.
Sharp and Japan Display do not publicly admit to the relationship even though Apple, in a list of component makers published last year, identified both Japanese companies as suppliers.
The Sharp executive made the comment at a press briefing in Osaka, western Japan, speaking on condition he wasn't identified.?

Reaction to the death of former New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, who died Saturday:
___
"Punch, the old Marine captain who never backed down from a fight, was an absolutely fierce defender of the freedom of the press. His inspired leadership in landmark cases such as New York Times v. Sullivan and the Pentagon Papers helped to expand access to critical information and to prevent government censorship and intimidation." ? Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., Sulzberger's son and the current publisher of the Times.
___
"As an editor you knew that if you went to the publisher and sought his support on an issue that you deemed to be of high importance you could pretty much count on getting it. He knew how to back his people. ... As well as a publisher and a colleague he was a good friend. The last years have been extremely difficult with his health problems. He bore them with great courage. I admired him hugely." ? Former Times executive editor Joseph Lelyveld.
___
"It was Punch Sulzberger who made the decision to resist the government's effort. In making that decision he set in motion a litigation which not only preserved but protected the First Amendment for generations. It was Punch Sulzberger who decided that this was a case that had to be fought. That decision was one that will be honored among not only journalists but future generations of Americans." ? Floyd Abrams, the lawyer who represented the Times in the Pentagon Papers case.
___
"He was a firm believer in the importance of a free and independent press ? one that isn't afraid to seek the truth, hold those in power accountable, and tell the stories that need to be told." ? President Barack Obama.
___
"Thanks to Arthur Sulzberger's leadership and his ability to not only survive but thrive in the face of challenging industry dynamics, The New York Times has remained a cultural touchstone and a dynamic global enterprise for decades. Arthur was a great New Yorker and a luminary in one of our city's biggest industries, and his loss will be felt by many. My thoughts and prayers are with his friends and relatives as well as the larger New York Times family." ? New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
___
"It also became increasingly clear that the system of monarchy helped save the New York Times as a great newspaper. Punch made some bad calls as a businessman, along with some great ones, but by far the most important fact about him and his family was that they never wavered in their commitment to great journalism." ? Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof.
___
"If you weren't around then, you forget the unbelievable outrage that greeted those sections. But in retrospect it was the right decision both editorially and economically." ? Nicholas Lemann, dean of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, on Sulzberger's move to expand the Times to sections such as Living and Weekend.
___
"Punch Sulzberger was a giant in the industry, a leader who fought to preserve the vital role of a free press in society and championed journalism executed at the highest level." ? Associated Press President and CEO Gary Pruitt.
___
"With enormous power and authority he was as humble a person as you could ever meet. ... People with enormous power often dominate a room. He did not. And yet the power and authority was there." ? Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch.
___
"He was a very approachable person. He was a little shy. ... You saw him in the elevator and he talked to anybody and everybody." ? Gay Talese, former Times reporter and author of "The Kingdom and the Power: Behind the Scenes at The New York Times."
___
"I found him always a gentleman and always ready to at least listen." ? Public relations maven Howard Rubenstein, who brought many clients to meet with Sulzberger and Times editors.

On a year-over-year basis real GDP increased 2.14% while the quarter-to-quarter non-annualized percent change was 0.31%.
?
The latest quarterly results indicate that the most notable source of weakness in the economy came from durable goods spending which declined at a rate of 0.2% from Q1 2012 while government spending declined across the board.?
Other categories such as residential structures also saw notable slowing from the prior quarter registering a still respectable rate of 8.5% while non-residential fixed structures expand by just 0.6%.??
Keep in mind that these results are likely very poorly estimated and are sure to be revised notably in following quarters and even years to come.

Creating dozens of reports manually is very time consuming
Sooner or later, every organization faces with necessity of creating computer inventory reports on hardware and software installed. Creating dozens of reports manually is very time consuming and requires a lot of patience.? Imagine a network with hundreds of computers and other network devices. The manual computer inventory procedure would take a few weeks or even longer.
?In this case, the dedicated network computer inventory software for automatic data gathering and creating reports has a lot of advantages over the standard manual inventory process. Lets review them in details:
1.?? ?The actual inventory information is obtained remotely from network computers. Thanks to the computer inventory programs available on the market, all the inventory information on installed hardware and software is gathered in a few seconds or minutes (depending on the number of machines to be polled on your network) without necessity to visit each workstation or server and review what is installed on it. All you need is administrator rights on the network computers.
2.?? ?Easy and handy access to the hardware configurations of computers allows planning hardware upgrades, finding computers with insufficient amount of memory, etc. The collected statistic information allows you to predict the cost of upgrading and maintaining all the computers on the network with high accuracy.
3.?? ?Some computer inventory software can record a history log for each PC being inventoried. This log is based on repeated computer scanning and comparing the scans. So, an automatic inventory program can track and log changes in hardware and software on computers displaying a full list of changed items. The most advanced programs can even notify an IT admin about the changes via email and send daily reports. This allows preventing the equipment theft by users or replacing hardware parts. In addition, the history log helps to track the movement of office equipment.
4.?? ?Good inventory software will update the inventory data repeatedly on a scheduled basis absolutely automatically. So, the data will always be fresh and updated.
5.?? ?All computer inventory programs are packed with dozens of ready-to-use report templates. IT administrator will not have to spend much time and efforts on creating hardware and software reports.
The remote computer inventory scanning is often based on the client-server technology with the mandatory installation of specialized software on target machines. It is loaded into the memory every time a PC starts, and collects the required data when it receives a command from the inventory database server or when it is started using its own internal cycles.
Some inventory programs are able to poll data without installing anything on remote machines. In such cases, the inventory information is gathered via the WMI technology.
Usually, the inventory software is not very demanding for resources, but they can have a significant impact on the CPU load. On low-end and old slow machines, it is recommended to run the inventory procedures using a scheduled start-up on idle time.
Employing an automatic computer inventory system gives a quite noticeable economic benefit. It saves a lot of IT administrators time allowing him to solve more important issues related to the network operation, such as, optimizing and upgrading the system. In addition, IT managers can always generate the latest reports on computers state and configuration, watch for the inventory changes, plan upgrades and annual budget expenses. Therefore, as any automation process, the computer inventory software will significantly increase the efficiency of the entire organization.

Romney and Clinton in New York (Lucas Jackson/Reuters)
NEW YORK?Months after he used former President Bill Clinton in ads to attack President Barack Obama, Mitt Romney finally shared a stage with the 42nd president. In an address at the Clinton Global Initiative's annual conference, Romney argued that the United States needs to retool how it allocates foreign aid.
Ahead of his speech, Romney poked fun at Clinton's influence on the 2012 race. After Clinton praised the former Massachusetts governor's support for the service programs City Year and AmeriCorps, Romney joked about the former president's glowing introduction.
"If there's one thing we've learned this election season, it's that a few words from Bill Clinton can do any man a lot of good," Romney said. "After that introduction, I guess all I have to do is wait a day or two for the bounce."
In his speech, Romney outlined plans for a "new approach" to America's foreign aid system, arguing that the U.S. should tie development assistance to requirements that would remove trade barriers to allow for greater U.S. investment and the spread of free enterprise.
"Ours is a compassionate nation. We look around us and see withering, suffering. Our hearts break," Romney said. "But too often our passion for charity is tempered by our sense that our aid is not always effective. We see stories of cases where American aid has been diverted to corrupt governments. We wonder why years of aid and relief seem never to extinguish the hardship, why the suffering persists decade after decade."
Romney argued that temporary aid under the current program can "jolt an economy" but "it can't sustain an economy" because "at some point, the money runs out." He insisted that a foreign aid program should be designed to foster private enterprise and job creation that would have a longer-lasting impact on a country's future.
Romney never directly referenced his Democratic opponent, but his speech was clearly meant to serve as a contrast to Obama's foreign policy approach, which has occurred against the backdrop of unrest in the Middle East and North Africa. The president speaks before the United Nations Tuesday about his policies.
Romney's speech came a day after he criticized Obama's comments on CBS' "60 Minutes" over the weekend, where the president suggested the recent outbreaks of violence overseas were just "bumps in the road." The Romney campaign immediately seized on the remark, suggesting that Obama was downplaying the death of Chris Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, and other Americans killed in attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions abroad.
Romney made no mention of Obama's comments but offered an implied criticism of the president's policies, arguing that the way to curb violence in the Middle East is to offer not simply foreign aid but opportunities for "work."
"That must be at the heart of our effort to help people build economies that can create jobs for people, young and old alike. Work builds self-esteem. It transforms minds from fantasy and fanaticism to reality and grounding," Romney said. "Work will not long tolerate corruption nor quietly endure the brazen theft by government of the product of hardworking men and women."
In a clear dig at Obama, Romney said if he wins the White House, he hopes to "remind the world of the goodness and bigness of the American heart."
"I will never apologize for America.?I believe that America has been one of the greatest forces for good the world has ever known," Romney said. "We can hold that knowledge in our hearts with humility and unwavering conviction."

It wasn?t easy, but thanks to a late Xavi Hern?ndez goal, Barcelona beat Granada this weekend, running their?La Liga record to a perfect 15 points in five games. What does that kind of start mean for Bar?a?s chances to reclaim Spain?s title?
As AS tells us (taking the data from Twitter?s Mister Chip), this is the seventh time Barcelona have been perfect through five rounds. On four of those occasions, Bar?a went on to win the title.
Is that a good ratio? Or what you?d expect from teams who start perfect through five rounds? Somebody needs to write a script that runs those scenarios. We don?t know. The stat sounds interesting though not very informative about 5-0-0 starts in general.
So AS/Mister Chip looked at more 5-0-0 starts. A team has started 5-0-0 on 24 other occasions in?La Liga history. Ten of those sides went on to win the title, a much lower success ratio than Barcelona?s. No team has started 5-0-0 and finished outside the top four.
It?s not much, but the 31 cases gives us some perspective. Perhaps it doesn?t tell us anything useful, but it hints there might not be anything useful to be told.
But even without looking at past data, we dig a little (only a little) deeper on Barcelona?s season to see if we can find something more descriptive than just ?perfect start?:
The defense has been the big concern for Barcelona. Though the numbers are good (only allowing three goals in five games), Bar?a?s back line passing isn?t the eye test. This weekend against Grenada, they almost gave up a late winner after two?impetuous?Granada players lept out the windows of their parked bus. Stats help paint a more rounded picture, but when Javier Mascherano and Alex Song are allowing Fabian Orellana an uncontested shot on Victor Valdes with the game in the balance, that?s cause for concern.
And although Barcelona?s done a good job of containing their opponents, those five teams aren?t putting up numbers that suggest they?re the most meaningful tests to Bar?a?s possession-hogging style. Barcelona?s only allowing 0.60 goals per game, but against the rest of the league, their opponents have only managed one goal per game.

This year, September has been an outstanding month for gold bugs. The Federal Reserve embarked on another tranche of money-printing in the form of its third round of quantitative easing, potentially debasing the value of the world?s major reserve currency, the dollar. The European Central Bank (ECB) also announced an ?unlimited? bond buying programme, possibly hinting at money printing to support it, if needs be.
According to Angelos Damaskos, chief executive of Sector Investment Managers and manager of the Junior Gold fund, these moves from the world?s two major central banks should prove positive for the gold price. ?Following recent announcements indicating further money-printing by the Fed and the ECB it should not be surprising that the price of gold has resumed its uptrend, on course for its 12th successive annual gain. Importantly, it has broken the psychologically important level of $1,700/oz, widely seen by technical analysts as [a] key ?resistance? [level].?
Mr Damaskos warns that the Fed?s decision to introduce another round of quantitative easing could further stoke inflation and devalue the dollar, sparking renewed interest from investors seeking safety.
?This move is also excellent news for gold mining stocks that have been sold off and unloved by investors for over a year now. We are in the early stages of the next major re-rating for gold mining equities as a sector, particularly smaller to middle capitalisation companies. The share prices of those companies with strong balance sheets, good management, growing production and reserves are likely to outperform,? he says.
Alongside its use in jewellery and certain industrial processes, gold is effectively a replacement reserve currency, used to hedge against weakness in the purchasing power of other reserve currencies ? most notably the dollar. As a result, it is often used by investors as a hedge against inflation.
In spite of such advantages, gold and other commodities have proved volatile for investors in recent years. Prior to the Fed and ECB announcements, Sheridan Admans, investment research manager at The Share Centre, observes that gold had weakened along with other commodities as the eurozone helped drag the world economy into a less inflationary scenario.
?For most of 2012 energy and hard commodities, gold aside, have been weaker as many European economies slip back into recession and even Germany, the powerhouse of Europe, has seen a slow-down in growth. This has also had an impact on China as weaker demand from Europe and the credit crisis continues to constrain money supply,? he says.
?Over the long term the emerging market growth story should continue to offer potential for investors. As these economies develop infrastructure to compete in the global market, this is likely to have an impact on the demand for commodities in the years to come. However, the volatility the sector exposes investors to is not going to go away as the credit crisis rumbles on.?
In the broader commodities sector, Mr Admans cites the JPMorgan Natural Resources fund as an investment portfolio worthy of attention from investors.
?Commodity valuations are looking better than they have for some time, so taking the long-term view of five years plus, investors should see some rewards from investing in a fund that has exposure to this sector,? he adds.
?This fund invests in a diversified portfolio of companies that are exposed to global resources and energy. It invests across three spectrums, with the portfolio roughly divided between gold, base metals and energy. It holds only equities and does not invest in direct commodities or exchange traded funds.?
As an investment, gold also faces more direct competition from other precious metals such as silver and platinum. When it comes to precious metals, investors usually see gold as the natural ?go to? investment. However, analysis carried out by Lloyds TSB reveals that the price of silver has outperformed that of gold over the past 10 years to the end of August.
Like many other areas of the resources marketplace, silver has had to evolve over time and has moved from being used only in jewellery and in the photography industry to profiting from applications in a range of industries, including solar panels, computers and security tags.
This growth in demand has been the main driver of the rising share price of silver ? something commodity analysts expect to continue as the demand for the metal continues to outstrip supply.
Overall, when it comes to allocating part of a portfolio to natural resources ? whether it be through exchange traded funds, open ended vehicles or by trading on price movements ? it is important that investors look beyond the obvious hedging benefits of gold. Although past performance is no guide to the future, it is possible that alternatives like silver will continue to outshine the yellow metal for some time to come.

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? No other trio of American golfers has qualified for more consecutive Ryder Cup teams than Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk. Collectively, they have won 146 official tournaments around the world, including 19 majors.
That only makes their Ryder Cup record look all the more inferior.
They have been the core of the U.S. team since 1997 at Valderrama, where they combined for a 3-6-1 record as the United States lost the cup. Perhaps it was a sign of what was to come. For all their individual achievement, none has a winning record in the Ryder Cup. They have been on six teams together ? Woods missed in 2008 at Valhalla while recovering from knee surgery ? and the only celebration they shared was that remarkable comeback at Brookline.
"I would have expected and definitely wished for a much better record than that," Furyk said Tuesday.
It leads to a question that brings to mind the chicken and the egg.
Do they all have losing records because they are playing on losing teams? Or does the U.S keep losing because this triumvirate has losing records?
"I think it's both," Woods said Tuesday. "In order to win cups, you have to earn points. And we certainly have not earned points. And on top of that, Phil, Jim and myself have been put out there a lot during those years. So if we're not earning points, it's hard to win Ryder Cups that way."
So much has been expected. So little has been delivered. And they are running out of time to leave a lasting impression.
Furyk is 42 and has gone four of the last five PGA Tour seasons without winning, though the exception was in 2010 when he won three times and was voted player of the year. Even so, he had to rely on being a captain's pick for the first time. Mickelson, also 42, has qualified for nine straight teams dating to 1995. He will set an American record for most Ryder Cups when the matches began Friday. Even so, he narrowly qualified for the team this year.
They will be leaned on heavily again at Medinah as the U.S. tries to win back the cup.
They Americans, dressed in navy blue shirts, headed out for the first full day of practice under warm sunshine in the Chicago suburbs. They played fourball matches among the three groups, which was evident when Bubba Watson and his pink-shafted driver drove through a dogleg on the 440-yard 11th hole and over the gallery's head. He still played that shot (and they won the hole).
U.S. captain Davis Love III finally showed his hand ? and confirmed some obvious pairings in mind ? by sending out Woods and Steve Stricker, Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, Watson and Webb Simpson. Other pairings were Matt Kuchar and Dustin Johnson, Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson, and Furyk and Brandt Snedeker.
There were few surprises on the European side.
European captain Jose Maria Olazabal had Ian Poulter, Justin Rose, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood in one group; Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Sergio Garcia and Paul Lawrie in another; and Mark Kaymer, Nicolas Colsaerts, Francesco Molinari and Peter Hanson in a third.
Furyk referred to McIlroy as a "marked man" last week, and not many could argue. The 23-year-old from Northern Ireland already is a two-time major champion, with both wins by eight shots. He has established himself as No. 1 in the world without debate, and has won three of his last six tournaments against the strongest field.
For so many years, Woods was that guy on the U.S. team, and that's why his record gets so much attention.
"I kind of liken it to playing premiership football, the biggest teams, the Manchester Uniteds, the Liverpools, the Chelseas, the Arsenals," McDowell said. "Any lesser team that comes to play these guys, they have a tendency to raise their game because it's a huge game for an underdog to play a Tiger Woods. And they get up for it. They are not expected to win. When expectation levels drop, game tends to improve. I think a guy who plays Tiger Woods, or a player of that caliber, he doesn't expect to win, so he lets it all go and he plays out of his skin and gets the upset."
Woods, despite his 86 wins and 14 majors, has never had a winning record in the Ryder Cup. He has combined to go 6-3-0 in his last two events to raise his career record to 13-14-2. Even at the height of his game, Europe would say that he could only win five points out of the 28 points up for grabs.
Woods never came close to that, which helps explain why Europe has won six of the seven Ryder Cups in which he played.
"Certainly, I am responsible for that because I didn't earn the points that I was put out there for," Woods said. "And that's part of being a team. I needed to go get my points for my team, and I didn't do that. Hopefully, I can do that this week. And hopefully, the other guys can do the same and we can get this thing rolling."
Mickelson began his Ryder Cup career in 1995 at Oak Hill, where he went 3-0 and privately burned that he wasn't used more often. That turned out to be the most points Mickelson contributed in a week.
Their contributions are so noticeable that Mickelson and Furyk are tied for losing the most fourball matches (eight) among American players. Furyk is 1-8-1 in fourballs, though there are pleasant Ryder Cup memories. He took down Nick Faldo in his debut at Valderrama, and it was his big win over Sergio Garcia at The Country Club in 1999 that was critical in the great American comeback.
None of this bothers Love, who played on only two winning teams and had a 9-12-5 record.
"Match play is just so different," he said. "I kind of throw the Jim Furyk or the Phil Mickelson or Tiger Woods record of wins and losses out. ... There's a reason why these guys keep making teams, and I don't look a whole lot at the record."
That speaks to what they have done in their careers. They qualified for six straight teams from 1997 through 2008 (Woods would have led the Ryder Cup standings except for being injured). Woods was a captain's pick only once, in 2010. Mickelson has never been picked.
They have shown themselves as America's best over the last 15 years. Trouble is, Europe keeps going home with the trophy.

LONDON (AP) ? Global health officials are closely following a new respiratory virus related to SARS that is believed to have killed at least one person in Saudi Arabia and left another person in critical condition in Britain.
The germ is a coronavirus, from a family of viruses that cause the common cold as well as SARS, the severe acute respiratory syndrome that killed some 800 people, mostly in Asia, in a 2003 epidemic.
In the latest case, British officials alerted the World Health Organization on Saturday of the new virus in a man who transferred from Qatar to be treated in London. He had recently traveled to Saudi Arabia and is now being treated in an intensive care unit after suffering kidney failure.
Health officials don't know yet whether the virus could spread as rapidly as SARS did or if it might kill as many people.
"It's still (in the) very early days," said Gregory Hartl, a WHO spokesman. "At the moment, we have two sporadic cases and there are still a lot of holes to be filled in."
Hartl said it was unclear how the virus spreads. Coronaviruses are typically spread in the air but Hartl said scientists were considering the possibility that the patients were infected directly by animals. He said there was no evidence yet of any human-to-human transmission.
"All possible avenues of infection are being explored right now," he said.
So far there is no connection between the cases except for a history of travel in Saudi Arabia. SARS was first spread to humans from civet cats in China.
Hartl said no other countries have so far reported any similar cases to WHO.
Other experts said it was unclear how dangerous the virus is.
"We don't know if this is going to turn into another SARS or if it will disappear into nothing," said Michael Osterholm, a flu expert at the University of Minnesota. He said it was crucial to determine the ratio of severe to mild cases.
SARS hit more than 30 countries worldwide after spreading from Hong Kong. Osterholm said it was worrying that at least one person with the disease had died. "You don't die from the common cold," he said. "This gives us reason to think it might be more like SARS," which killed about 10 percent of the people it infected.
Britain's Health Protection Agency and WHO said in statements that the 49-year-old Qatari national became ill on Sept. 3, having previously traveled to Saudi Arabia. He was transferred from Qatar to Britain on Sept. 11 and is being treated in an intensive care unit at a London hospital for problems including kidney failure. Respiratory viruses aren't usually known to cause serious kidney problems.
The Health Protection Agency said it was unaware of any ties the patient had to Britain and that he likely was in a private clinic in the Middle East before being transferred to the London hospital. It said none of the health workers involved in his treatment had fallen ill.
WHO said virus samples from the patient are almost identical to those of a 60-year-old Saudi national who died earlier this year. The agency isn't currently recommending travel restrictions and said the source of infection remains unknown.
Saudi officials said they were concerned the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage next month, which brings millions of people to Saudi Arabia from all over the world, could provide more opportunities for the virus to spread. They advised pilgrims to keep their hands clean and wear masks in crowded places.
The Hajj has previously sparked outbreaks of diseases including the flu, meningitis and polio.
