Physics Nobel Prizes and second acts

Luis Alvarez who after winning a Nobel Prize in physics, made a key contribution to a totally different field with his son Walter (left) (Image: Wikipedia Commons)

A couple of days ago I wrote a post discussing chemists who did significant work after receiving a Nobel Prize. The examples are few but noteworthy; accomplishing one significant piece of scientific work is hard enough, so if you manage more than one you should definitely be recognized. A commenter pointed out that there?s likely more such cases in physics so I decided to find out. I looked at the list of all Nobel Prizes in physics starting from 1900 and found interesting examples and trends.

Let?s start with the two physicists who are considered the most important ones of the twentieth century in terms of their scientific accomplishments and philosophical influence ? Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr. Einstein got a Nobel Prize in 1921 after he had already done work for which he would go down in history; this included the five groundbreaking papers published in the ?annus mirabilis? of 1905, his collaboration on Bose-Einstein statistics with Satyendranath Bose and his work on the foundations of the laser. After 1921 Einstein did not accomplish anything of similar stature but he became famous for one enduring controversy, his battle with Niels Bohr about the interpretation of quantum theory that started at the Solvay conference in 1927 and continued until the end of his life. This led to the famous paper on the EPR paradox in 1935 that set the stage for all further discussions of the weird phenomenon known as quantum entanglement.

Bohr himself was on the cusp of greatness when he received his prize in 1922. He was already famous for his atomic model of 1913, but he was not yet known as the great teacher of physics ? perhaps the greatest of the century ? who was to guide not just the philosophical development of quantum theory but the careers of some of the century?s foremost theoretical physicists, including Heisenberg, Gamow, Pauli and Wheeler. Apart from the rejoinders to Einstein?s objections to quantum mechanics that Bohr published in the 30s, he contributed one other idea of overwhelming importance, both for physics and for world affairs. In 1939, while tramping across the snow from Princeton University to the Institute for Advanced Study, Bohr realized that it was uranium-235 which was responsible for nuclear fission. This paved the path toward the separation of U-235 from its heavier brother U-238 and led directly to the atomic bomb. Along the same lines, Bohr collaborated with his young protege John Wheeler to formulate the so-called liquid drop model of fission that likened the nucleus to a drop of water; shoot an appropriately energetic neutron into this assembly and it wobbles and finally breaks apart. Otto Hahn who was the chief discoverer of nuclear fission later won the Nobel Prize and it seems to me that along with Fritz Strassman, Lisa Meitner and Otto Frisch, Bohr also deserved a share of this award.

Since we are talking about Nobel Prizes, what better second act than one that results in another Nobel Prize. As everyone knows, this singular achievement belongs to John Bardeen who remains the only person to win two physics Nobels, one for the invention of the transistor and another for the theory of superconductivity. And like his chemistry counterpart Fred Sanger who also won two prizes in the same discipline, Bardeen may be the most unassuming physicist of the twentieth century. Also along similar lines, Marie Curie won another prize in chemistry after her pathbreaking work on radioactivity with Pierre Curie.

Hans Bethe kept on making important contributions to physics into his nineties (Image: Wikipedia Commons)

Let?s consider other noteworthy second acts. When Hans Bethe won the prize for his explanation of the fusion reactions that fuel the sun, the Nobel committee told him that they had trouble deciding which one of his accomplishments they should reward. Perhaps no other physicist of the twentieth century contributed to physics so persistently over such a long time. The sheer magnitude of Bethe?s body of work is staggering and he kept on working productively well into his nineties. After making several important contributions to nuclear, quantum and solid-state physics in the 1930s and serving as the head of the theoretical division at Los Alamos during the war, Bethe opened the door to the crowning jewel of quantum electrodynamics by making the first decisive calculation of the so-called Lamb shift that was challenging the minds of the best physicists. This work culminated in the Nobel Prize being awarded to Feynman, Schwinger and Tomonaga in 1965. Later at an age when most physicists are just lucky to be alive, Bethe provided an important solution to the solar neutrino puzzle in which neutrinos change from one type to another as they travel to the earth from the sun. There?s no doubt that Bethe was a supreme example of a second act.

Another outstanding example is Enrico Fermi, perhaps the most versatile physicist of the twentieth century, equally accomplished in both theory and experiment. After winning a prize in 1938 for his research on neutron-induced reactions, Fermi was the key force behind the construction of the world?s first nuclear reactor. That the same man who designed the first nuclear reactor also formulated Fermi-Dirac statistics and the theory of beta decay is a fact that still beggars belief. The sheer number of concepts, laws and theories (not to mention schools, buildings and labs) named after him is a testament to his mind. And he achieved all this before his life was cut short at the young age of 53.

Speaking of diversity, no discussion of second acts can ignore Philip Anderson. Anderson spent his entire career at Bell Labs before moving to Princeton. The extent of Anderson?s influence on physics becomes clear when we realize that most people today talk about his non-Nobel Prize winning ideas. These include one of the first descriptions of the Higgs mechanism (Anderson is still regarded by some as a possible contender for a Higgs Nobel) and his firing of the first salvo into the ?reductionism wars?; this came in the form of a 1972 Science article called ?More is Different? which has since turned into a classic critique of reductionism. Now in his eighties, Anderson continues to write papers and has written a book that nicely showcases his wide-ranging interests and his incisive, acerbic and humorous style.

There?s other interesting candidates who show up in the list. Luis Alvarez was an outstanding experimental physicist who made important contributions to particle and nuclear physics. But after his Nobel Prize in 1968 he re-invented himself and contributed to a very different set of fields; planetary science and evolutionary biology. In 1980, along with his son Walter, Alvarez wrote a seminal paper proposing a giant asteroid as the cause for the extinction of the dinosaurs. This discovery about the ?K-Pg boundary? really changed our understanding of the earth?s history and is also one of the most exemplary examples of a father-son collaboration.

There?s a few more scientists to consider including Murray Gell-Mann, Steven Weinberg, Werner Heisenberg, Charles Townes and Patrick Blackett who continued to make important contributions. It?s worth noting that this list focuses on achievements after winning the prize; a ?lifetime achievement? list would include many more scientists like Lev Landau, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Max Born. It?s also important to focus on non-research activities that are still science-related. A list of these achievements would include teaching (Feynman, Fermi, Bohr, Born), writing (Blackett, Feynman, Bridgman, Weinberg), science and government policy (Bethe, Compton, Millikan, Rabi) and administration (Bragg, Thomson, de Gennes, Rubia). Bonafide research is not the only thing at which great scientists excel.

2013 NFL Draft video review: Blidi Wreh-Wilson

The Phinsider's video review of 2013 NFL Draft prospects continues with a look at one of the top man-coverage cornerbacks available this spring: UCONN's Blidi Wreh-Wilson.

Finally! In a pre-draft season where quality scouting tape is scarce (where have you gone, NFL Draft Analyst?), we've found game footage of a top cornerback prospect going toe to toe with one of the best quarterbacks in the country.

The top corner prospect in question is, of course, UCONN's Blidi Wreh-Wilson. And though he currently isn't as big a name as Alabama's DeMarcus Milliner, Mississippi State's Johnthan Banks or Florida State's Xavier Rhodes, Wreh-Wilson is arguably the best man-coverage defender in this year's class (Washington's Desmond Trufant might have something to say about such a statement, though). How Wreh-Wilson has made it this far into the draft process with little-to-no scouting hype is beyond me; nevertheless, he should be one of the more visible names in this draft following the Combine next week.

One thing to note: the top quarterback prospect mentioned above is Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater, a Miami native who might end up as the No. 1 overall pick in 2014. He did exit the UCONN game for a few series before returning to finish the contest; however, most of the throws on this tape come from Bridgewater.

Here's a brief guide regarding what to look for while viewing Wreh-Wilson's performance against Louisville last fall:

1) Not many corner prospects can turn and run better than Wreh-Wilson. His elite-level hips, balance and footwork are on display throughout the Louisville contest, and he's positively fluid in his ability to stay with receivers downfield. He's in bail technique for much of this video, but looks comfortable and tenacious in press-coverage situations. Wreh-Wilson also has the upper-body strength and arm length to re-route and disrupt receivers at the line of scrimmage, and keeps his feet moving throughout the jam. He's seamless coming out of breaks, and possesses good short-area burst for the position.

2) No one will confuse Wreh-Wilson with Dee Milliner in the tackling department, but the former shows the ability to wrap-up effectively, and sticks his nose in on most plays. He's average in terms of physicality, though, and will need to get stronger and more consistent at the next level. He's lightning fast in his ability to identify the run, but will occasionally take improper angles.

3) Wreh-Wilson's ball skills are just average at this point, but he does flash the ability to turn, locate and disrupt. He doesn't possesses an ideal "playmaker" skill set, but has the range and size to match-up with most NFL receivers.

Wreh-Wilson doesn't project as a turnover machine at the next level, but his speed, length and technical acumen indicate genuine potential as an excellent cover corner in the NFL.

Strengths: Size, speed and elite-level technique; effective jam at the line of scrimmage; fluid, instinctive defender; reads the game well and displays a natural, athletic feel for the corner position; smooth and balanced out of breaks

Weaknesses: Not a big hitter; hands don't always look natural; will occasionally take incorrect angles in run support

Dopants dramatically alter electronic structure of superconductor

Monday, February 18, 2013

Over the last quarter century, scientists have discovered a handful of materials that can be converted from magnetic insulators or metals into "superconductors" able to carry electrical current with no energy loss-an enormously promising idea for new types of zero-resistance electronics and energy-storage and transmission systems. At present, a key step to achieving superconductivity (in addition to keeping the materials very cold) is to substitute a different kind of atom into some positions of the "parent" material's crystal framework. Until now, scientists thought this process, called doping, simply added more electrons or other charge carriers, thereby rendering the electronic environment more conducive to the formation of electron pairs that could move with no energy loss if the material is held at a certain chilly temperature.

Now, new studies of an iron-based superconductor by an international team of scientists - including physicists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cornell University - suggest that the story is somewhat more complicated. Their research, published online in Nature Physics February 17, 2013,* demonstrates that doping, in addition to adding electrons, dramatically alters the atomic-scale electronic structure of the parent material, with important consequences for the behavior of the current-carrying electrons.

"The key observation - that dopant atoms introduce elongated impurity states which scatter electrons in the material in an asymmetric way - helps explain most of the unusual properties," said J.C. S?amus Davis, the study's lead author, who directs the Center for Emergent Superconductivity at Brookhaven Lab and is also the J.G. White Distinguished Professor of Physical Sciences at Cornell University. "Our findings provide a new starting point for theorists trying to grapple with how these materials work, and could potentially point to new ways to design superconductors with improved properties," he said.

The researchers used a technique developed by Davis called spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy to visualize the electronic properties around individual dopant atoms in the parent material, and to simultaneously monitor how electrons scatter around these dopants (in this case, cobalt).

Earlier studies had shown that certain electronic properties of the non-superconducting "parent" material had a strong directional dependence - for example, electrons were able to move more easily in one direction through the crystal than in the perpendicular direction. However, in those studies, the signal of a strong directional dependence only appeared when the scientists put the dopants into the material, and got stronger the more dopants they added.

Before this, the assumption was that dopants simply added electrons, and that the material's properties - including the emergence of superconductivity - were due to some intrinsic characteristic (for example, the alternating alignments of electron spins on adjacent atoms) that resulted in a directional dependence.

"But the emergence of directional dependence of electronic properties as more dopants are added suggests that the strong directionality is a result of the dopants, not an intrinsic property of the material," Davis said. "We decided to test this idea by directly imaging what each dopant atom does to the nearby atomic-level electronic structure in these materials."

According to Davis, the current paper reports two very clear results:

1) At each cobalt dopant atom, there is an elongated impurity state-a quantum mechanical state bound to the cobalt atom-that aligns in a particular direction (the same for each cobalt atom) relative to the overall crystal. 2) These oblong, aligned impurity states scatter the current-carrying electrons away from the impurity state in an asymmetric way - similar to the way ripples of water would propagate asymmetrically outward from an elongated stick thrown into a pond, rather than forming the circular pattern produced by a pebble.

"These direct observational findings explain most of the outstanding mysteries about how the electrical current moves through these materials - for example, with greater ease perpendicular to the direction you would expect based solely on the characteristics of the parent material," Davis said. "The results show that the dopants actually do dramatic things to the electronic structure of the parent material."

"It's possible that what we've found could be similar to an effect dopants had on early semiconductors," Davis said. "Early versions of these materials, though useful, had nowhere near the performance as those developed after the 1970s, when scientists at Bell Labs figured out a way to move the dopant atoms far away from the electrons so they wouldn't mess up the electronic structure." That advance made possible all the microelectronics we now use every day, including cell phones, he said.

"If we find out the dopant atoms are doing something we don't want in the iron and even copper superconductors, maybe we can find a way to move them away from the active electrons to make more useful materials."

Pakistan faces growing anger over sectarian bombings

QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - Pakistan's unpopular government, which is gearing up for elections expected within months, faced growing anger on Sunday for failing to deliver stability after a sectarian bombing in the city of Quetta killed 81 people.

The nuclear-armed country's leaders have done little to contain hardline Sunni Muslim groups which have stepped up a campaign of bombings and assassinations of minority Shi'ites.

On Saturday, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), seen as the most ruthless Sunni sectarian group, claimed responsibility for the attack in Quetta, which deepened suspicions among Shi'ites that Pakistan's intelligence agencies were turning a blind eye to the bloodshed or even supporting extremists.

"The terrorist attack on the Hazara Shi'ite community in Quetta is a failure of the intelligence and security forces," Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi, governor of Baluchistan province, said while touring a hospital.

Leaders of the ethnic Shi'ite Hazara community called on the government to take decisive action, and Pakistanis warned that sectarian violence was spiraling out of control.

"The government is responsible for terrorist attacks and killings in the Hazara community because its security forces have not conducted operations against extremist groups," said Aziz Hazara, vice president of the Hazara Democratic Party.

"We are giving the government 48 hours to arrest the culprits involved in the killing of our people and after that we will launch strong protests."

The death toll from Saturday's bombing rose overnight, with most of the casualties in the main bazaar of the town, capital of Baluchistan, near the border with Afghanistan.

Most of the dead were Hazaras. A senior security official said the figure could rise as 20 people were critically wounded.

On Sunday, people searched for survivors under blocks of cement torn off buildings by the blast. A large blood stain could be seen on a wall near the site.

Many shops and bazaars were closed. Relatives of the wounded responded for an appeal for blood made by hospitals.

"The government knows exactly who is doing what and who is behind all this," said Mohammad Imran, a local trader. "If the government wants (to prevent it), no one can take even a kitchen knife into any market."

In the capital Islamabad, about 400 people, including some Sunnis, staged a protest demanding the government to stamp out extremism.

"There is a law of the jungle, but in this country I think there is not even a law of the jungle," said Syed Abbas Naqvi, a Shi'ite.

"A person who is extremely helpless, vulnerable and powerless is always made the target of barbarity whereas all brutal people like the terrorists, Taliban and others who carry out these merciless acts...roam free all over the country."

Protests were also held in other cities, including the commercial capital Karachi, and in Quetta.

POVERTY, CORRUPTION, POWER CUTS

Public anger has been growing over a host of other issues in the run-up to elections, from widespread poverty to power cuts to corruption. But waves of major sectarian attacks have highlighted its poor track record on security.

Critics say Pakistan's intelligence agencies previously supported groups like LeJ to fight against Indian forces in Kashmir and failed subsequently to control them.

Now Shi'ites in Quetta and other cities say they are under siege. "We have grown tired of picking up the bodies of our loved ones," said Nasir Ali, 45, a government employee. "I have lost three family members so far in such blasts."

LeJ has also said it was behind a bombing last month in Quetta which killed nearly 100 people, one of Pakistan's worst sectarian attacks.

After that incident, Shi'ite leaders called on Pakistan's military to take over security in Quetta and take on the LeJ.

Sectarian violence is piling pressure on the U.S.-backed administration, which already faces a Taliban insurgency, to ensure stability.

"Unless we decide to unite, we will continue to get killed, said Malik Afzal, a Sunni student. "Today they (Shi'ites) have died. Tomorrow we (Sunni Muslims) will die. The next day, others will get killed."

Pakistani intelligence officials say extremist groups, led by LeJ, want to destabilize the nation through sectarian violence and pave the way for a Sunni theocracy.

More than 400 Shi'ites were killed in Pakistan last year, many by hitmen or bombs. Some hardline Shi'ite groups have struck back by killing Sunni clerics.

Lack of iron regulating protein contributes to high blood pressure of the lungs

Feb. 17, 2013 ? A protein known to regulate iron levels in the body has an unexpectedly important role in preventing a form of high blood pressure that affects the lungs, and in stabilizing the concentration of red cells in blood, according to a study in mice by researchers at the National Institutes of Health.

In mice, lack of iron regulatory protein 1 (Irp1) results in pulmonary hypertension, a form of high blood pressure that affects the lungs, and to polycythemia, a rare disorder in which the body produces excess red blood cells.

"This insight might lead to progress in treating cases of polycythemia or pulmonary hypertension without a known cause," said senior author Tracey A. Rouault, M.D., of the Division of Intramural Research (DIR) at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), where the research was conducted. It's possible, she added, that human cases of these disorders might result from malfunctioning copies of the gene for Irp1.

The study also provides insight into how the body directs iron into the manufacture of blood to prevent anemia, the deficiency of red blood cells.

The findings appear in Cell Metabolism.

Dr. Rouault collaborated with more than a dozen other NIH researchers, including first authors Manik C. Ghosh, Ph.D., and Deliang Zhang, Ph.D., also of the NICHD's DIR, as well as researchers at the NIH Veterinary Resources Program and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Denver, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln were also part of the team.

Iron regulatory protein 1 (Irp1) detects iron levels in cells and directs either the storage or use of iron, depending on other conditions in the body. The researchers found that mice lacking Irp1 produced high levels of hypoxia inducible factor 2-alpha (HIF2 alpha), a protein produced in response to low oxygen conditions, like those that occur at high altitudes. In turn, HIF2 alpha spurs production of the hormone erythropoietin, which stimulates the production of red blood cells.

When the animals were put on low-iron diets, they did not become anemic, but instead developed polycythemia and pulmonary hypertension.

In people, polycythemia and high blood pressure in the lungs are rare conditions, and in some cases occur without a known cause. It is possible that changes in the gene for Irp1 may account for some of these cases, the researchers suggest.

To investigate Irp1's role in regulating the body's use of iron, the researchers reared mice lacking the gene that makes Irp1 and divided the animals into two groups, feeding one group a normal diet and the other a low iron diet.

Within a year, less than 40 percent of the mice on the low-iron diet had survived. Most had died from abdominal hemorrhaging. The researchers found that the mice on low iron diets had high levels of HIF2 alpha in the lungs and kidney. These animals produced high levels of erythropoietin, which resulted in polycythemia. HIF2 alpha also triggered increased production of a substance known as endothelin-1 in the lungs, which likely contributed to the development of pulmonary hypertension.

"Irp1 appears to be the switch that controls whether HIF2 alpha protein is made," Dr. Zhang said.

This research also provided insight into how Irp1 functions under normal circumstances Dr. Rouault explained. The researchers theorize that in low-iron conditions, Irp1 allows the production of HIF2 alpha. HIF2 alpha then triggers production of erythropoietin, to generate more red blood cells. To supply iron for the red blood cells, iron is removed from the tissues. When tissue iron levels decline too much, Irp1 halts production of HIF2 alpha, and production of new blood cells ceases, conserving the body's remaining iron stores. Production of red blood cells then declines, leading to anemia.

Posterous to Turn Off the Lights at End of April, Just Over One Year After Being Acquired by Twitter

Posterous is one of those social media startups that never seemed to find a specific place to call its own on the Internet. It?s not like we don?t already have Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest, among others. That was before it was acquired by Twitter last March. After just over a year of pretty much doing nothing with Posterous, it?s been revealed that Twitter will be shutting the service down on April 30th. All five people that were still using the service will surely be very distraught.

Sony Xperia ZL coming to a swath of Canadian carriers in April

Sony Xperia ZL hands-on

It's not quite a US launch, but it's close: Sony is bringing the more compact of its two 5-inch smartphones, the Xperia ZL, to Canada in April. While that's already good news for locals who like their Xperias extra-large, the real perk will be a change in Sony's tendency toward limited launches in North America. The release will put the ZL on several of the more significant Canadian networks, including heavyweights Bell and Rogers as small-but-significant carriers like Mobilicity, MTS, Videotron and Wind Mobile -- the only major exceptions appear to be Telus and the big providers' budget brands. There's no word on pricing, although we're not expecting a radical break from the norm. We're mostly just left wondering whether the Xperia Z will appear as well, and just which if any of Sony's 1080p flagships will cross the border to the States.

Chemists at the University of Liverpool have created a new technique that could be used in industry to separate complex organic chemical mixtures.

Chemical feedstocks containing benzene are used extensively in industry to create modern materials and polymers. Their use relies heavily on distillation techniques which separate complex mixtures into more simple molecules used as building blocks to develop drugs, plastics and new materials. These distillation techniques can be expensive and involve large amounts of energy for hard-to-separate mixtures.

A team of researchers at the University's Department of Chemistry, led by Professor Andrew Cooper, have created organic molecular crystals that are able to separate important organic aromatic molecules by their molecular shape.

Professor Cooper said: "We were able to demonstrate this new molecule separation technique by synthesising porous organic cage molecules that are highly similar in shape to the molecules that need to be separated.

"The holes in these cage molecules act like a shape-selective molecular sieve, rather like a children's wooden shape puzzle. Using computer simulations we revealed how the porous cages separate the aromatic feedstocks and show that, unlike a wooden shape puzzle, the mechanism actually involves flexibility and motion in the cage sieves. "

The ability to separate complex molecules using less energy will be important in the future for current petrochemical and chemical industries and for producing any next-generation sustainable bio-derived chemicals.

The findings are part of a five-year research programme in new materials discovery, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and are published in Nature Chemistry.

Commerzbank loses ?716 million in Q4

(AP) ? Germany's Commerzbank says it's making progress in reshaping its business but still has a long way to go as higher shipping loan losses and low interest rates continue to squeeze profits.

The bank provided detail Friday on its fourth-quarter earnings announced Feb. 4. It lost ?716 million largely due to one-time losses of ?185 million on its sale of Bank Forum in Ukraine and ?560 million in tax accounting charges.

The bank says it made progress in winding down businesses that it's getting rid of, in commercial real estate and shipping finance. Its non-core assets division shrank by ?9 billion to ?151 billion during the quarter.

But the bank says high loan losses from its remaining ship finance business weighed on earnings. And low rates are hurting interest income.

Obama emphasizes economic benefits of immigration overhaul

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama emphasized the economic benefits of overhauling the country's immigration laws in his State of the Union speech on Tuesday as he urged Congress to send him legislation to sign into law in the next few months.

In a speech largely focused on job creation, Obama said the United States could strengthen its economy by attracting more high-tech workers from overseas and establishing a pathway to citizenship for those who entered the country illegally.

"Our country is stronger when we harness the talents and ingenuity of striving, hopeful immigrants," Obama said.

Unlike some of Obama's other proposals, an immigration plan stands a chance of passing both the Democratic-controlled Senate and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives because of the growing clout of the Latino electorate.

Obama emphasized the common ground that exists among a range of stakeholders on immigration, such as the need to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and attract top global talent.

"Let's get this done. Send me a comprehensive immigration reform bill in the next few months, and I will sign it right away and America will be better for it," he said.

Obama's demand for quick action demonstrates how immigration has leaped to the top of the agenda after years of inaction.

Obama is eager to act on a top priority of Latinos, who favored him over Republican Mitt Romney in the November 6 election by 71 percent to 27 percent, helping Obama win politically divided states such as Florida and Nevada.

Republicans, meanwhile, worry that they will be consigned to irrelevancy if they do not do more to appeal to Hispanics, who the Pew Hispanic Center estimates will make up nearly one-third of the U.S. population by the middle of the century.

"The president's remarks are yet another reminder that what seemed politically impossible only a year ago is now within our reach, if only for a fleeting moment, as Democrats have a political debt to pay and Republicans a party to save," said Cheryl Little, director of Americans for Immigrant Justice, a Miami immigrant-advocacy group.

Other factors are helping as well.

Illegal immigration has declined sharply since the last time Congress took up the issue in 2007, largely because of the downturn in the U.S. economy. That has eased concerns that migrants are taking American jobs or disrupting U.S. communities.

Meanwhile, business and labor groups have increasingly chafed against the limits of a system that is widely viewed as broken.

High-tech companies argue that the country's restrictive visa program hampers innovation by limiting the number of skilled workers they can recruit from abroad.

RUBIO RESPONDS

Hamilton Place Strategies, a Washington research group, argued in a recent paper that low-skilled immigrant workers in agriculture also boost the economy by increasing work for Americans in other sectors, such as transportation and marketing.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio, who was picked by his party to respond to Obama's speech late Tuesday, also emphasized the economic benefits of immigration reform.

"We can also help our economy grow if we have a legal immigration system that allows us to attract and assimilate the world's best and brightest," said Rubio, a son of Cuban immigrants who is working to forge a bipartisan immigration bill in the Senate.

Rubio highlighted a potential stumbling block. While Obama has emphasized the importance of creating a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million immigrants who are in the United States illegally, many Republicans emphasize that the nation's borders must be secured first.

"We need a responsible, permanent solution to the problem of those who are here illegally. But first, we must follow through on the broken promises of the past to secure our borders and enforce our laws," Rubio said.

Determining when the borders have reached an adequate level of security could prove tricky.

Obama said there are more troops on the U.S.-Mexican border than ever and pointed out that border apprehensions are at their lowest level in 40 years.

The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol's budget has increased 18 percent since Obama took office, but further increases could prove difficult in an era when Congress has agreed to tight spending caps that will effectively diminish the government's purchasing power in coming years.

Even if Rubio and other lawmakers resolve the border-security issue, many Republicans could vote against a bill on the grounds that any amnesty could lead to more illegal immigration, as happened after laws were last overhauled in 1986.

Other Republicans have signaled a new openness to overhauling immigration laws.

House Republican leader Eric Cantor, who is leading an effort to soften his party's image, says he would support legal status for those who entered the country illegally with their parents. He voted against a similar measure in 2010.

Israel censors reports on Australian 'Prisoner X' case

Updated February 13, 2013 14:16:23

The Australian uncle of a suspected Mossad agent found dead inside a super-secret Israeli jail cell has told the ABC the case is a "tragedy", but would not shed any light on whether the dead man was Israel's infamous 'Prisoner X'.

Israeli censors have banned reports of an ABC Foreign Correspondent exclusive into the case of Melbourne man Ben Zygier - aka Ben Alon or Ben Allen - who was found dead in a high-security cell at a prison near Tel Aviv in late 2010.

The evidence suggests Zygier was 'Prisoner X', who Israeli and international media have speculated was an inmate whose presence was not acknowledged by the jail system or the government.

Read Trevor Bormann's original story here.

Zygier's arrest and jailing in Israel remains a mystery, but the ABC understands he had been recruited by spy agency Mossad.

It is understood he "disappeared" in early 2010, spending several months in the Prisoner X cell at Ayalon Prison in the city of Ramla before being found dead.

A former operative with Australia's overseas spy agency ASIS has told the ABC that Zygier's transgression would have to have been involved with "espionage, treachery - very, very sensitive information that, known to others, would pose an immediate threat to Israel as a nation state."

This morning Zygier's musician uncle Willy Zygier, who is the partner of Melbourne singer Deborah Conway, told ABC Local Radio in Melbourne that he had "no idea what is true, what isn't true."

"All I know is there's a family tragedy.? Every suicide is a tragedy. That's all I've got to say," he said.

"I don't know what else to say.? There's nothing else to say.

"Ben's parents are in mourning. I don't know if they'll talk. And I'm a humble musician. I don't know anything."

Zygier's family has previously declined to speak to the ABC, and friends and acquaintances approached by Foreign Correspondent in Melbourne had also refused to comment.

Watch the full Foreign Correspondent report on Prisoner X on iview.

Coverage stifled

The Prisoner X case is regarded as one of the most sensitive secrets of Israel's intelligence community, with the government going to extraordinary lengths to stifle media coverage and gag attempts by human rights organisations to expose the situation.

When an Israeli news website reported that the prisoner died in his cell in December 2010, Israeli authorities removed its web pages.

Within hours of the Foreign Correspondent report going to air, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office summoned Israeli editors to ask them not to publish a story "that is very embarrassing to a certain government agency", Israel's Haaretz newspaper said.

"The emergency meeting was called following a broadcast outside Israel regarding the incident in question."

Shortly afterwards, references to the ABC report vanished from Israeli news sites, including that of Haaretz itself.

There is no doubt that if this information is accurate this is something that ought to be checked.

Israeli justice minister Yaakov Neeman

Such a gag order is highly unusual in Israel, where state military censors normally allow local media to quote foreign sources on controversial incidents - such as an alleged attack on Syria last month by the Israeli air force.

Members of the Israeli parliament in Jerusalem asked justice minister Yaakov Neeman to confirm if the report was true, and demanded to know if other prisoners were being held in secret.

"This matter is not within the jurisdiction of the justice ministry," Mr Neeman responded.

"There is no doubt that if this information is accurate, this is something that ought to be checked."

The state censors allowed news outlets in Israel to report the parliamentary debate, but nothing else.

Secret imprisonment

Foreign Correspondent said Zygier was 34 at the time of his death and had moved to Israel about 10 years earlier. He was married to an Israeli woman and had two small children.

At the time of his disappearance, the Association for Civil Rights in Israel criticised the imprisonment and wrote to Israel's attorney-general.

"It's alarming that there's a prisoner being held incommunicado and we know nothing about him," wrote the association's chief legal counsel Dan Yakir.

The assistant to the attorney-general wrote back: "The current gag order is vital for preventing a serious breach of the state's security, so we cannot elaborate about this affair."

Contacted by the ABC, Mr Yakir would not comment on the case, quoting a court order gagging discussion.

Bill van Esveld, a Jerusalem-based advocate for Human Rights Watch, has described the secret imprisonment of Prisoner X as "inexcusable".

"It's called a disappearance, and a disappearance is not only a violation of that person's due process rights - that's a crime," he told Foreign Correspondent.

"Under international law, the people responsible for that kind of treatment actually need to be criminally prosecuted themselves."

Zygier's apparent suicide in prison adds to the mystery. He was found hanged in a cell which was equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance systems installed to prevent suicide. Guards reportedly tried unsuccessfully to revive him.

His body was retrieved and flown to Melbourne. He was buried in Chevra Kadisha Jewish cemetery in the suburb of Springvale on December 22, seven days after his death.

Zygier's family has declined to speak to the ABC, and friends and acquaintances approached by Foreign Correspondent in Melbourne have also refused to comment.

'Ideal recruits'

Australia's domestic intelligence agency ASIO has long scrutinised Australian Jews suspected of working for Mossad.

The agency believes Mossad recruits change their names from European and Jewish names to "Anglo" names.

They then take out new passports and travel to the Arab world and Iran, to destinations Israeli passport holders cannot venture.

Warren Reed, a former intelligence operative for Australia's overseas spy agency ASIS, told Foreign Correspondent that Australians were ideal recruits for Mossad.

"Australians abroad are generally seen to be fairly innocent," he said.

"It's a clean country - it has a good image like New Zealand.

"There aren't many countries like that, so our nationality and anything connected with it can be very useful in intelligence work."

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that Zygier also carried an Australian passport bearing the name Ben Allen.

Map: Ayalon prison, Ramla, Israel

When told details of Foreign Correspondent's investigation, Foreign Minister Bob Carr said he was concerned by the claims.

"Those allegations certainly do trouble me," Senator Carr said.

It's called a disappearance, and a disappearance is not only a violation of that person's due process rights - that's a crime.

Human rights advocate Bill van Esveld

"It's never been raised with me. I'm not reluctant to seek an explanation from the Israeli government about what happened to Mr Allen and about what their view of it is.

"The difficulty is I'm advised we've had no contact with his family [and] there's been no request for consular assistance during the period it's alleged he was in prison."

But he said that in the absence of a complaint by Zygier's family, there was little for the Australian Government to act upon.

Shadow foreign affairs minister Julie Bishop said she was seeking detail about the case and was disturbed by reports that the Israeli government is censoring the reports.

"That's a matter that I'll raise directly with the Israeli embassy to get an understanding of the basis for it," she said.

"If there are security considerations I can understand it, but if it's just about embarrassing a government agency, then that certainly requires an explanation and I'll be seeking one."

International conventions spell out that when a foreigner is jailed or dies, their diplomatic mission must be informed.

Senator Carr said Australian diplomats in Israel only knew of Mr Zygier's incarceration after his death.

Mr van Esveld said it was inexcusable for the Australian Government not to be notified.

"The obligation of one country to notify another when the other citizen has been arrested, detained, especially if they die - that is so basic. It is called customary law," he said.

"Which means that even if Israel didn't ratify a treaty saying it has to notify the other country, it still has to do so because that is such a basic norm of interstate relations."

The greater mystery is why Zygier was imprisoned under such secrecy.

Sources with connections to Israel's intelligence community have told Foreign Correspondent his predicament would have been "extreme" to warrant such harsh treatment.

Former ASIS operative Mr Reed told the ABC: "However the transgression came about, it would have to be involved with espionage, treachery - very, very sensitive information that, known to others, would pose an immediate threat to Israel as a nation state."

The Israeli embassy in Canberra has declined to comment.

Category-defining digital assets have a certain intrinsic value which is derived from:

  • Ability to evoke trust and project consumer confidence
  • Strength as a brand
  • Commercial usability
  • Ability to capture intuitive type-in traffic
  • Uniqueness and ability to resist dilution
  • Simplicity and ability to be easily recalled

By Taylor Frank:?September 19, 2011 ?(http://www.imediaconnection.com/content/30012.asp)

Last November, Amazon acquired a company called Quidsi Inc. in a deal valued at $500 million. Quidsi is the parent company of BeautyBar.com, an online boutique for luxury beauty products; Soap.com, the largest online specialty store for health, personal care, and household products; and Diapers.com, the largest online baby care specialty store. Diapers.com is also the fastest-growing e-commerce website in the world.

According to Internet Retailer, Diapers.com alone generated $292 million in online sales in 2010, up 60 percent from its 2009 sales.

Diapers.com is just one example of the amazing marketing potential of category-defining digital assets, particularly domain names. When properly leveraged, owning a strong category-defining domain name can capture large volumes of online traffic, thereby driving revenue and increasing online brand presence.

The ability to rank well in search engine results is a key factor that makes category-defining domain names valuable digital assets. Multiple factors determine where a website ranks among a search engine's results for a given query, but the weight placed on each factor (i.e., the full details of each search engine's algorithm) is not publicly known. We do know, however, that Google and Bing attribute better rankings to websites with high levels of parity between their domain names and the keyword (i.e., non-brand) terms people use to search for them. One example that illustrates this concept is the keyword term "shopping." Overstock.com, Macy's, Shopzilla, Amazon, QVC, and Target all appear on the first page of Google results when users search the term "shopping." But Shopping.com, owned by eBay, beats out all these retail giants, taking the number one spot. Because category-defining domain names attract natural "search engine love," their owners have to invest less money in optimizing the website itself to achieve high rankings.

From a branding perspective, a category-defining domain allows a marketer to own that category, and position its brand as the definitive online destination for that category. Drugstore.com, for example, is ranked 46 on Internet Retailer's list of top 500 online retailers, making it one of the biggest online health and beauty specialty retailers (second only to Amway Global). One factor in Drugstore.com's success is its category-defining domain name and brand. It ranks at the very top of organic search results for both "drugstore" and "online drugstore," and, according to Compete.com, on average receives about 4 million unique visitors per month.

Category-defining domain names are instantly recognizable and easy to communicate, making them a solid foundation on which to build a new brand. What could be more intuitive for a site that sells movie tickets than MovieTickets.com? Instead of starting from scratch and having to work to earn brand equity around a completely new term, category-defining domains provide a degree of instant equity for the category they represent. Brown Shoe Co. is probably best known for its Famous Footwear brand of shoe retail stores. But in 2001, Brown launched Shoes.com as an e-commerce platform. Last year, Shoes.com brought in $120 million in sales.Of course, this intrinsic equity of category-defining domain names does not automatically guarantee the success of a new brand, but it can give marketers a leg up on the competition.

In addition to Drugstore.com, there are 19 other retailers on Internet Retailer's Top 500 list whose primary domain names are category-defining. For 18 of these 20, the category-defining domain name is also the name of the brand (e.g., Ancestry.com, Wine.com, etc.), and 12 of these 20 had sales of?more than?$50 million in 2010.

Many companies have also realized that owning category-defining domain names can boost their existing brands by allowing them to capture online traffic that they might not otherwise receive. For example, whenever internet users type the domain Mortgage.com into their browsers, they are directed to CitiMortgage.com, Citi's mortgage page.

PetSmart is another example of a company that uses generic domain names: It owns Pet.com, Pets.com, PetFood.com, Dogs.com, and DogFood.com, all of which point to PetSmart's website. CBS Interactive owns TV.com, Radio.com, VideoGames.com, and others; SalesForce owns Database.com; Barnes & Noble owns Book.com and Books.com; and Sleepy's owns Sleep.com and Mattress.com. These are just a few examples of brands that are using category-defining domain names to capture additional online traffic and boost their business.

To reiterate, category-defining domain names can be great digital assets to marketers and brand owners, whether they use them to augment their existing brands or to launch new brands. The downside (or the upside if you are one of the lucky ones to own one) is that there is a limit to the number of valuable category-defining domains that exist in the current domain name space. In other words, there is only one Makeup.com, and L'Oreal owns it -- meaning Est?e Lauder, Sephora, and other cosmetics companies cannot own it. However, beginning in January 2012, marketers and other entities will be able to apply for their own generic top-level domain names (gTLDs), or the extensions that come after the "dot" in web addresses (.com, .net, .jp, and .mx are all examples of top-level domains). If they so desire, marketers will have the chance to apply for category-defining gTLDs, meaning Sephora could apply for .makeup and advertise domain names like Mascara.makeup and LipGloss.makeup.

Whether new gTLD domain names will achieve the same power and value as category-defining .com domain names remains to be seen but chances are and I would bet on it they won't?achieve?anywhere near the success as the .com because .com is what is ingrained in the consumers mind, they won't even?achieve?the success of the .com which is and WILL always be KING nor will they even hit the success of the .net or the .org, the only other domains that will continue to row is country code tlds. See what happened to .info? .biz? .travel etc? The cost to register these by these companies is over $180,000 and all they plan to do then is sell registrations off once they have them but no matter what it is just going to drive more and more traffic back to the .com. Even as the internet and the domain name space continue to evolve, one thing has held constant: When leveraged correctly, category-defining domains are capable of attracting large online audiences and have the potential to provide a great deal of value to brand owners.

We are only selling because we wish to create other niche products within our brand and we wish to bring in some liquid capital to so that we may do this. This is an INCREDIBLE opportunity and these domains give our BRAND a ton of AUTHORITY, CREDIBILITY and targeted traffic and massive ASSET value! ?I really do not want to sell them but expansion of our line takes a lot of capital and I have some amazing new supplements that I want to create BUT the downside is I could have used this whole network to promote them but I have no choice as I do not want to take on investor capital and always have raised my own funds. We acquired all of these domains over the years and have over $1m into them all. Our loss is your gain:
