Obama turns to police chiefs for help on guns

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama on Monday turned to law enforcement leaders in three communities with mass shootings for help in getting Congress to pass tough new gun legislation.

At a White House meeting, Obama said that no group is more important in the gun debate and he said he recognizes the issue "elicits a lot of passion all across the country." But Obama also said he believes Congress will respond to appeals from police.

"Hopefully if law enforcement officials who are dealing with this stuff every single day can come to some basic consensus in terms of steps that we need to take," he said, "Congress is going to be paying attention to them, and we'll be able to make progress."

The president's meeting comes as he tries to build support for gun control legislation that will be difficult to get through Congress. He urged Congress to pass an assault weapons ban, limit high capacity magazines and require universal background checks.

Obama met in the Roosevelt Room with the heads of the Major Cities Chiefs Association and the Major County Sheriffs Association, members of his Cabinet and chiefs that responded to the worst shootings of 2012. That includes Aurora, Colo., where 12 were killed in July; Oak Creek, Wis., where six died in a Sikh temple assault: and Newtown, Conn., scene of the most recent mass tragedy that left 20 first-graders dead.

Obama also said that Washington needs to take mental health issues and school safety more seriously and should help law enforcement agencies hire more police, make sure they get the training they need and give rural forces the resources they need to deal with emergencies.

"Many of them also recognize that it's not only the high profile mass shootings that are of concern here," the president said. "It's also what happens on a day in day out basis in places like Chicago or Philadelphia where young people are victims of gun violence every single day."

Thousands of crocs escape in flooding in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG - Afraid of crocodiles? Then you may want to stay away from the South Africa-Botswana border.

About 7,000 crocodiles escaped a crocodile farm when the gates on a dam were opened this week to alleviate pressure created by rising flood waters. About 2,000 have been recaptured, the Beeld newspaper reported Friday.

Video from the scene shows people hunting down the small-ish crocs at night, tying them up and taking them back to the Rakwena Crocodile Farm, in northern South Africa. The farm, which didn't respond to an email or calls seeking comment, used to hold 15,000 crocodiles.

The farm's website shows goods like crocodile-skin purses and hats for sale.

Northern South Africa and neighbouring Mozambique have seen massive floods over the last week.

Green Blog: Court Faults E.P.A.'s Biofuels Mandate

A federal appeals court has thrown out part of the Environmental Protection Agency?s biofuels mandate, saying that it was based on a wishful assessment of how much cellulosic fuel could be produced.

So far, producers have had a hard time generating the volume that would be needed to meet the cellulosic fuel quota set for refiners, which is part of an effort by the Obama administration to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

Cellulosic fuel is generated from agricultural waste and even household garbage through a process using bacteria, catalysts and the digestive juices of microorganisms.

The text of the ruling is here.

CRFB Corporate Ties: Budget Watchdog Funded By Big Tobacco In 1990s Health Care Fight

WASHINGTON -- The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget is known in Washington as a nonpartisan budget watchdog, a central voice in calls to rein in the nation's debt. The CRFB features a respected list of Republicans and Democrats on its board and regularly hosts current leaders in the nation's capital for panel discussions on the future of the budget.

But historical documents raise questions about whether the CRFB -- which is also the primary vehicle advocating private equity billionaire Peter Peterson's debt reduction agenda, including cuts to social safety net programs --- has allowed corporate donations to influence its work on budget issues.

The organization was used in the early 1990s to create a front group for tobacco companies during the battle over President Bill Clinton's health care reform proposal. That group, called the Cost Containment Coalition, presented itself as a civic-minded coalition of those interested in finding the most responsible solution to the health care crisis. The corporate interests funding it had entirely different motives, according to documents collected by the Public Accountability Initiative, a public interest research nonprofit.

According to these documents, found in the Tobacco Legacy Library and at the Securities and Exchange Commission, the CRFB from 1992 to 1994 accepted money from the tobacco industry -- including Philip Morris and the Tobacco Institute -- in exchange for using the group's image as a bipartisan budget watchdog, through the coalition, to advocate against a proposed excise tax on tobacco products.

In a 1992 memo, Philip Morris spokesman Craig Fuller wrote that health care coalitions at the time were focused on how to solve the problem of access to health care, while "[v]ery little attention has been paid to the true problem with the health care system that actually impairs access and also puts Philip Morris at risk vis-a-vis increased excise taxes -- the escalating costs of the system and how to pay for it."

The solution to explaining this "true problem" was found in the formation of the Cost Containment Coalition. This group, according to the same 1992 Philip Morris memo, was to be formed "under the auspices of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, and will be directed by Carol Cox," then president of the CRFB.

At the time, the CRFB president, whose full last name is Cox-Wait, was listed in an internal Philip Morris document as one of many "corporate affairs consultants" receiving personal compensation from the company. These documents show that she received $47,000 from the tobacco company in 1993, in the middle of the CRFB's work for the tobacco industry. Cox-Wait was also married to Philip Morris Vice President Bob Wait.

In an interview, Cox-Wait denied any impropriety, saying that the information in the tobacco documents may reveal Philip Morris' perspective on its interaction with the CRFB, but it was not that of the committee.

"They contributed to us, and they may have seen it that way, but what we were doing was a very serious study," Cox-Wait said, referring to a report on health care reform costs released by the CRFB.

In 1993, Calvin H. George, tax counsel at the Tobacco Institute, the industry's lobbying arm, described that report as "useful" to protecting tobacco profits.

"What is most useful here is a strong statement from a bipartisan group of budget experts warning that rhetoric about reforming health care as a means of bringing the deficit under control should be viewed with skepticism, at best," George wrote in an internal message to Susan Stuntz, vice president of public affairs at the Tobacco Institute.

Cox-Wait further defended her dual work at the time as both a corporate consultant and the head of the respected budget group. "When I was president of CRFB, I also ran a small consulting firm called Carol Cox & Associates. My board was aware of it. When I did that, I took a cut in pay and separated the time I did for the two of them."

Corporate interests pushing unpopular policies often seek cover from respected independent groups. In the tobacco industry's eyes, the CRFB apparently filled that role. "Because of her bipartisan Board, 'Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget,' and given her 'neutral' status, Carol is able to access many people who would be inaccessible to us given our issues," another internal Philip Morris document explained.

Cox-Wait said she always made it known that her consulting work was separate from her work at the CRFB. "I would say this is two hats, and this has nothing to do with the committee when I was giving budget process advice to private parties and being paid for it," she said.

The CRFB's connection to the tobacco industry did not end after the Clinton health care proposal fizzled in 1994. Internal documents from both Philip Morris and the Tobacco Institute show that Cox-Wait continued her consulting for the industry up until 2001. In a Feb. 7, 2001, letter dictating a schedule for a Philip Morris tax-and-budget team meeting, Cox-Wait is listed as the presenter for the "Federal Budget Situation."

Tobacco companies were not the only ones who saw the CRFB as worth connecting with. During the 1990s, insurance companies made contributions to the group and, according to a 1994 SEC filing by the health insurer Cigna, Cox-Wait was paid $12,000 as a consultant before joining the company's board in 1995. While Cox-Wait was under contract with Cigna, which opposed health care reform, the CRFB released a 148-page report that pointedly criticized seemingly every significant health care reform proposal at the time.

Cox-Wait remains on the board of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, which is now run by Maya MacGuineas. Last year, the CRFB created a new entity called Fix the Debt, also headed by MacGuineas and funded by Peterson and multiple CEOs and corporations. Fix the Debt is calling for a grand deficit bargain to be reached by raising revenue, cutting spending and reforming social insurance programs.

DNA bullets tag criminals for later arrest

17 hrs.

Cops have gained a new tool to use in their never-ending quest to catch criminals: Guns that fire uniquely?coded DNA pellets.

The bullets are fired from a rifle and pistol, and are effective at distances up to about 130 feet, says??Selectamark, the company that recently?unveiled the system.?The non-lethal bullets leave a tell-tale mark on whomever they hit so that suspects can be identified and arrested at a less confrontational time, according to?the company.

The SelectaDNA High Velocity System may be particularly useful in situations where security personnel are unable to safely apprehend suspects, such as during riots???assuming the cop has good aim.

The bullets evolved from the company?s DNA Spray, launched in 2008.?It?sprays?suspects,?and?the?spray?in?turn?triggers special alarms in businesses, such as jewelry stores and gas stations.?The DNA remains on offenders for weeks.

In 1901 the star GK Persei gave off a powerful explosion that has not stopped growing and astonishing ever since. Now a team of Spanish and Estonian astronomers has reconstructed the journey of the emitted gas in 3D which, contrary to predictions, has hardly slowed down its speed of up to 1,000 km/s after all this time.

Thanks to the images captured from the Isaac Newton Telescope and the Nordic Optical Telescope in La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain), a European team of astronomers has constructed a three dimensional map of the remnant of a nova, or in other words, what was left of the star after its explosion. The results have just been published in the Astrophysical Journal.

The protagonist of this story is the star GK Persei situated at 'just' 1,300 light years away from Earth. It is also known as Nova Persei 1901 because a strong thermonuclear eruption occurred on its surface on the 21st February 1901. On that day astronomers observed how its brightness suddenly increased to such an extent that it became one of the brightest stars in the skies.

The surprising thing is that the explosion created remaining material made up of gaseous knots, which become visible in 1916. "From then the visual spectacle has been similar to that of a firework display seen in slow motion," claims Miguel Santander, researcher at Spanish National Observatory and coauthor of the study.

After patient work to gather images, the team was able to measure the movements of more than 200 knots as well as the radial velocity using the Doppler effect, which allows to determine if they are getting closer or moving further away from us. In this way the 3D map of the nova was created and its dynamic was analysed.

"Such data are rarely available in astrophysics because as a general rule apparent expansion or, in other words, in the layout of the sky, the majority of objects cannot be seen," outlines another of the authors, Romano Corradi, from the Astrophysics Institute of the Canary Islands.

An unexpected result

In any case, the main result of this work "is that the gas seems to be moving further away in a ballistic or free manner and is hardly slowing down, contrary to what was thought in previous studies," comments the lead author of the investigation, Tiina Liimets of the Tartu Observatory in Estonia.

Until now it was thought that the gas from the explosion would slow down "significantly" due to the large quantity of matter in its path that the star has expelled previously. However, its speed has remained between a range of 600 and 1000 kilometres per second.

Long before the explosion in 1901, more than one hundred thousand years ago, GK Persei had already undergone a massive transformation from a red giant to a white dwarf. This process expelled its external layers forming a planetary nebula, which is a giant gas cloud within which the nova is now growing in 3D.

TV Batmobile Sells for $4,620,000 - the Car News In One

The 1960s was a different time in the super hero community. Citizens could go go dance with their favourite good guys. Crime fighters were able to battle unarmed henchmen with the accompaniment of music and wacky screen captions. A public in general would blindly trust supervillains to the point of knowingly sell military equipment (such as a submarine). Finally yet importantly, a man dressed in a costume could run around a city in daylight alongside a costumed boy without anyone suspecting something inappropriate was taking place.

However, the 1960s super hero was also permitted to have a sharp looking automobile with a full array of crime fighting tools. In the mid 1960s TV series Batman, the caped crusader and his heroic companion Robin rode in the most famous customized Lincoln ever built. A car originally created from a Ghia designed 1950s show car called the Lincoln Futura, the television shows vehicle was modified by legendary automotive customizer George Barris. Buying the show car from Ford Motor Company for only a dollar, Harris added many of his own touches (including a metal pail to represent a turbine jet port to create the iconic Batmobile. Running for 120 episodes between 1966 and 1968 with a full length movie added for good measure, the George Barris designed Batmobile remains a favorite among fans even as several new iterations at the vehicle appeared in media.

Since the television network ABC would only rent the Batmobile from George Barris, the customizer retained ownership of the creation when the show went off the air. At the 2013 Barrett Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona, the vehicle would change hands for the first time in almost 50 years.

Attracting an immediate buzz prior to the sale at Barrett Jackson, the Saturday night auction of the most famous Batmobile lured a massive scene fit for the guardians of Gotham City. As The Batmobile was wheeled onto the Barrett Jackson auction stage, it came apparent that the vehicle was unlike any other. A sea of people surrounded the actual television used Batmobile and its ultimate creator George Barris who rode onto the auction stage inside the vehicle (perhaps for the final time). With a bang, bidding rocketed past the million dollar mark and it was not long until the Batmobile flew into the multiple million range.

Before the auction, it was noted the Batmobile was selling as a reserve lot (meaning bids needed to meet or exceed a minimum amount in order to sell). Shortly after the Batmobile received a 2.7 million dollar bid, it was announced that the auction lots reserve was lifted. When the auctioneers hammer fell, the dark knights 1960s Batmobile sold for $4,200,000 (becoming a $4,620,000 vehicle once the buyers commission was tabulated).

After the auction, an interview with the new owner of the famous TV series Batmobile stated his plans were to display the vehicle in his living room. Unclear whether he was joking, the comment does fit nicely in the light hearted content Adam West and Burt Ward delivered as the caped crusaders in the mid 1960s.

Pandora cranked out over 13 billion hours of music in 2012

DNP Pandora cranked out over 13 billion hours of music in 2012

Springing into the new year, internet radio heavyweight Pandora has released some of its major statistics from 2012. The company states that 1.6 billion personalized radio stations were created and that it played over 13 billion hours of music. These hefty stats translate to the service's users listening to over one million different songs from more than 100,000 artists. Wrapping up last year's scorecard, around 10,000 artists reached about 250,000 unique listeners. While these numbers are impressive, we can't help but wonder how many audio commercials had to be endured so people could continue listening to countless hours of One Direction. In any case, we're sure it was worth it.

Loneliness, like chronic stress, taxes the immune system, researchers find

Jan. 19, 2013 ? New research links loneliness to a number of dysfunctional immune responses, suggesting that being lonely has the potential to harm overall health.

Researchers found that people who were more lonely showed signs of elevated latent herpes virus reactivation and produced more inflammation-related proteins in response to acute stress than did people who felt more socially connected.

These proteins signal the presence of inflammation, and chronic inflammation is linked to numerous conditions, including coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis and Alzheimer's disease, as well as the frailty and functional decline that can accompany aging.

Reactivation of a latent herpes virus is known to be associated with stress, suggesting that loneliness functions as a chronic stressor that triggers a poorly controlled immune response.

"It is clear from previous research that poor-quality relationships are linked to a number of health problems, including premature mortality and all sorts of other very serious health conditions. And people who are lonely clearly feel like they are in poor-quality relationships," said Lisa Jaremka, a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research at Ohio State University and lead author of the research.

"One reason this type of research is important is to understand how loneliness and relationships broadly affect health. The more we understand about the process, the more potential there is to counter those negative effects -- to perhaps intervene. If we don't know the physiological processes, what are we going to do to change them?"

The results are based on a series of studies conducted with two populations: a healthy group of overweight middle-aged adults and a group of breast cancer survivors. The researchers measured loneliness in all studies using the UCLA Loneliness Scale, a questionnaire that assesses perceptions of social isolation and loneliness.

Jaremka will present the research January 19 at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology annual meeting in New Orleans.

The researchers first sought to obtain a snapshot of immune system behavior related to loneliness by gauging levels of antibodies in the blood that are produced when herpes viruses are reactivated.

Participants were 200 breast cancer survivors who were between two months and three years past completion of cancer treatment with an average age of 51 years. Their blood was analyzed for the presence of antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus.

Both are herpes viruses that infect a majority of Americans. About half of infections do not produce illness, but once a person is infected, the viruses remain dormant in the body and can be reactivated, resulting in elevated antibody levels, or titers -- again, often producing no symptoms but hinting at regulatory problems in the cellular immune system.

Lonelier participants had higher levels of antibodies against cytomegalovirus than did less lonely participants, and those higher antibody levels were related to more pain, depression and fatigue symptoms. No difference was seen in Epstein-Barr virus antibody levels, possibly because this reactivation is linked to age and many of these participants were somewhat older, meaning reactivation related to loneliness would be difficult to detect, Jaremka said.

Previous research has suggested that stress can promote reactivation of these viruses, also resulting in elevated antibody titers.

"The same processes involved in stress and reactivation of these viruses is probably also relevant to the loneliness findings," Jaremka said. "Loneliness has been thought of in many ways as a chronic stressor -- a socially painful situation that can last for quite a long time."

In an additional set of studies, the scientists sought to determine how loneliness affected the production of proinflammatory proteins, or cytokines, in response to stress. These studies were conducted with 144 women from the same group of breast cancer survivors and a group of 134 overweight middle-aged and older adults with no major health problems.

Baseline blood samples were taken from all participants, who were then subjected to stress -- they were asked to deliver an impromptu five-minute speech and perform a mental arithmetic task in front of a video camera and three panelists. Researchers followed by stimulating the participants' immune systems with lipopolysaccharide, a compound found on bacterial cell walls that is known to trigger an immune response.

In both populations, those who were lonelier produced significantly higher levels of a cytokine called interleukin-6, or IL-6, in response to acute stress than did participants who were more socially connected. Levels of another cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, also rose more dramatically in lonelier participants than in less lonely participants, but the findings were significant by statistical standards in only one study group, the healthy adults.

In the study with breast cancer survivors, researchers also tested for levels of the cytokine interleukin 1-beta, which was produced at higher levels in lonelier participants.

When the scientists controlled for a number of factors, including sleep quality, age and general health measures, the results were the same.

"We saw consistency in the sense that more lonely people in both studies had more inflammation than less lonely people," Jaremka said.

"It's also important to remember the flip side, which is that people who feel very socially connected are experiencing more positive outcomes," she said.

Hundreds attend NYC memorial for Internet activist Aaron Swartz

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Supporters of Aaron Swartz, the 26-year-old Internet activist who committed suicide last week, gathered in New York to remember the computer prodigy on Saturday, with some calling for changes in the criminal justice system they blame for his death.

Swartz, who at 14 helped create an early version of the Web feed system RSS and believed the fruits of academic research and other information should be freely available to all, was found dead a week ago in his Brooklyn apartment.

The city's chief medical examiner ruled the death a suicide by hanging.

He had been facing trial on federal charges he used the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's computer networks to steal more than 4 million articles from JSTOR, an online archive and journal distribution service.

Swartz, who had also worked on the popular website Reddit, had faced a maximum sentence of 31 years in prison and fines of up to $1 million.

"He told me about the 4.5 million downloads of scholarly articles, and my first thought was why isn't MIT celebrating this?" Edward Tufte, an emeritus professor of computer science at Yale University and a friend of Swartz, said to applause from the crowd gathered in The Cooper Union's Great Hall in Manhattan.

Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, Swartz's partner, criticized what she described as MIT's "indifference" to the saga, saying the school could have acted to end his prosecution.

The president of MIT said this week the school was investigating its role in Swartz's case. JSTOR has said in a statement it settled any dispute with Swartz in 2011 and praised his "important contributions to the development of the Internet."

CALL FOR CHANGE

At the memorial, attended by hundreds of friends and supporters, the strongest criticisms were reserved for prosecutors in the office of Carmen Ortiz, the U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts.

Roy Singham, the chairman of ThoughtWorks, a software consultancy firm where Swartz worked, called the case against Swartz "an abuse of state power" intended to intimidate Swartz. He called for the reform of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act under which Swartz was prosecuted.

Swartz's partner said it all became too much for him to bear.

"He was so scared and so frustrated and more than anything so weary I just don't think he could take it another day," Stinebrickner-Kauffman said, adding the pair had discussed getting married after the trial.

Ortiz has defended her office's actions, saying prosecutors "took on the difficult task of enforcing a law they had taken an oath to uphold, and did so reasonably."

She said they offered Swartz a deal to plead guilty to multiple counts of wire fraud and computer fraud and spend six months at a low-security facility.

Swartz was remembered as a precocious talent who began addressing technology conferences as a teenager and whose quirks included being loath to wash his dishes and preferring bland foods like crackers and white rice.

Many speakers said he was by far the smartest and most intellectually curious person they had known, and called on those in attendance to continue his work of trying to widen the public's access to information and communication channels.

Stinebrickner-Kauffman said Swartz disliked grand ceremonies and would have been uncomfortable with some aspects of his own memorial.

"But memorial services are for the living," she said, repeating it several times like a mantra, "and last Friday he forfeited his right to decide that."

Lance Armstrong may have lied to Winfrey, investigators say

Lance Armstrong may have lied to Oprah Winfrey during his so-called confession Thursday night about his doping during the Tour de France bicycle race, investigators told ABC News today.

Armstrong, 41, admitted for the first time that his decade-long dominance of cycling and seven wins in the Tour de France were owed, in part, to performance-enhancing drugs and oxygen-boosting blood transfusions. He told Winfrey that he was taking the opportunity to confess to everything he had done wrong, including angrily denying reports for years claiming that he had doped.

Investigators familiar with Armstrong's case, however, said today that Armstrong didn't completely come clean. They say he blatantly lied about when he stopped doping, saying the last time he used the drugs and transfusions was the 2005 race.

"That's the only thing in this whole report that upset me," Armstrong said during the interview. "The accusation and alleged proof that they said I doped [in 2009] is not true. The last time I crossed the line, that line was 2005."

"You did not do a blood transfusion in 2009?" Winfrey asked.

"No, 2009 and 2010 absolutely not," Armstrong said.

Investigators familiar with the case disagree. They said today that Armstrong's blood values at the 2009 race showed clear blood manipulation consistent with two transfusions. Armstrong's red blood cell count suddenly went up at these points, even though the number of baby red blood cells did not.

Investigators said this was proof that he received a transfusion of mature red blood cells.

If Armstrong lied about the 2009 race, it could be to protect himself criminally, investigators said.

Federal authorities looking to prosecute criminal cases will look back at the "last overt act" in which the crime was committed, they explained. If Armstrong doped in 2005 but not 2009, the statute of limitations may have expired on potential criminal activity.

The sources noted that there is no evidence right now that a criminal investigation will be reopened. Armstrong is facing at least three civil suits.

The second half of Armstrong's interview is set to air tonight.

Shock and disenchantment were among the reactions from people most familiar with the famed cyclist's history after his on-air confession Thursday night.

"I could not believe that Lance apologized," Betsy Andreu, the wife of Armstrong's former teammate and close friend Frankie Andreu, said today on ABC's "Good Morning America".

"Lance doesn't say, 'I'm sorry.' Lance isn't used to telling the truth and so I think in the days to come, in the months to come, I'm hoping that we'll see the contrition. Actions speak louder than words so if the words aren't empty ...," Andreu said.

ABC News consultant and USA Today columnist Christine Brennan called Armstrong's admitting that he used performance-enhancing drugs "a major miscalculation."

"This is like Bernie Madoff coming back after three months or Richard Nixon coming back after three months. No one wants to hear from those people so soon," Brennan told George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America."

"It was a lose-lose going in. I think he did more harm than good to his reputation, and he just looked cold-blooded, and cutthroat, and ruthless," Brennan said.

Minutes after Armstrong's confession aired on Oprah Winfrey's OWN network, the Livestrong Foundation -- the Austin-Texas-based cancer charity that he founded -- released a statement expressing disappointment in their former leader.

"We at the LIVESTRONG Foundation are disappointed by the news that Lance Armstrong misled people during and after his cycling career, including us," the statement read. "Earlier this week, Lance apologized to our staff and we accepted his apology in order to move on and chart a strong, independent course.

"Our success has never been based on one person -- it's based on the patients and survivors we serve every day, who approach a cancer diagnosis with hope, courage and perseverance."

READ MORE: Did Doping Cause Armstrong's Cancer?

Travis Tygart, head of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, said in a statement, "Tonight, Lance Armstrong finally acknowledged that his cycling career was built on a powerful combination of doping and deceit. His admission that he doped throughout his career is a small step in the right direction. But if he is sincere in his desire to correct his past mistakes, he will testify under oath about the full extent of his doping activities."

The agency issued an October report in which 11 former Armstrong teammates described the system under which they and Armstrong received drugs with, they say, the knowledge of their coaches and help of team physicians. As a result of the organization's findings, Armstrong was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles. Soon, longtime sponsors including Nike began to abandon him, too.

John Fahey, president of the World Anti-Doping Agency said, "He was wrong, he cheated and there was no excuse for what he did. If he was looking for redemption, he didn't succeed in getting that."

Such a reaction\ to the highly anticipated interview was only the tip of the iceberg as pundits, those close to Armstrong and even everyday people took to Twitter and other social media outlets to share their thoughts on what Armstrong said was "one big lie that I repeated a lot of times."

Cyclist and former Armstrong teammate Jonathan Vaughters tweeted, "A good first step. I need to sleep."

David Walsh, author of the Lance Armstrong book, "Seven Deadly Sins," tweeted, "First reaction is Oprah began the interview brilliantly with her series of 'yes or no' questions. It felt good to hear him admit to doping."

The reaction included Brennan's USA Today column headlined, "If Possible, Armstrong Less Likeable After Oprah."

"He was even more unlikable than one might have imagined. He was smug. He was curt. He was cold and unfeeling," Brennan wrote.

But more legal troubles could be on the horizon for the former Tour de France winner after this tell-all interview.

"He's opening himself up to an enormous amount of possible civil litigation here that could lose him millions of dollars," ABC News legal analyst Dan Abrams said.

Winfrey's Armstrong interview seen by 3.2 million

(AP) ? Oprah Winfrey's interview with Lance Armstrong is more than an illustration of a hero athlete tumbling from the heights. It's also a pivotal moment for a famous media figure trying to climb the ladder back up.

Winfrey's OWN network is showing signs of life after a rocky start, and the Armstrong interview offered a chance for many more viewers to check it out. The former Tour de France cyclist admitted to cheating with performance enhancing drugs throughout his career during the first half of the interview Thursday night.

That program was seen by a total of 4.3 million viewers in Thursday's back-to-back airings, OWN said Friday. But it drew only 3.2 million viewers in its first airing, an audience that fell short of OWN's most-viewed telecast: an interview Winfrey conducted with the Whitney Houston family last March following the singer's death the previous month.

The second half of the Armstrong interview is to air Friday night.

The interview "showcases the No. 1 asset this network has over everybody else ? and that's Oprah Winfrey," said Erik Logan, co-president of the network with Sheri Solata. It also showcased about everything else; OWN relentlessly advertised its programming on just about every commercial break.

Winfrey, who hosts "Oprah's Master Class," ''Oprah's Life Class" and a weekly interview show on OWN, attended a real-life television management class over the past three years. The network launch at the dawn of 2011 came during the last season of Winfrey's popular syndicated show, and that proved to be a major strategic error.

The daily talk show gave Winfrey's fans their Oprah jolt, and they had little reason to watch the Oprah Winfrey Network. Winfrey wasn't much of a presence there, anyway. She was concentrating on making sure her syndicated show went out with a flourish.

OWN flailed for direction with little-noticed celebrity reality shows featuring the Judds and Ryan and Tatum O'Neal. A Rosie O'Donnell talk show was an expensive flop.

Discovery Communications, which sunk a reported $250 million into OWN, told Winfrey she needed to be more involved with OWN, on and off screen. In July 2011, she became CEO as well as chairwoman of OWN, replacing Christina Norman.

"The initial expectations for this network turned out to be unrealistic," said Brad Adgate, an analyst for Horizon Media. "Oprah wasn't on camera. The shows weren't all that good. The network got raked over the coals. People thought the network would be doing a million viewers (on average) and it's doing a third of that."

The Discovery networks save money by sharing services, yet OWN had set up its own fiefdom. That ended. Discovery brought in its executives to take over legal and business affairs, and OWN laid off one-fifth of its staff last March. To the outside world it looked like a sinking ship, while to Discovery the ship was being righted.

"We were always a lot more confident internally than it looked externally," said David Leavy, chief communications officer for Discovery.

Like all cable networks, OWN has a dual revenue stream with advertising income as well as payments from cable and satellite operators to carry it on their systems. In its early days, OWN was operating on fees negotiated for its predecessor network, Discovery Health. Now much larger fees negotiated specifically for OWN are kicking in, many of them at the first of this year. Discovery says OWN will turn profitable this year.

A network still needs viewers to sustain itself, and there are some signs of life there, too. OWN's prime-time audience averaged 310,000 in 2012, up 30 percent from 2011, the Nielsen company said. Isolate the last three months of each year and the increase is 61 percent, even more among the target of middle-aged women.

OWN is carving out a small niche where it hadn't expected.

The Saturday night lineup of "Welcome to Sweety Pie's," about former Ike and Tina Turner backup singer Robbie Montgomery's soul food restaurant that she operates with her family, and "Iyanla: Fix My Life," an advice show with inspirational speaker Iyanla Vanzant, represent the most successful non-Oprah shows. Another new program, "Six Little McGhees, which follows the life of an Ohio couple with sextuplets, is also on the Saturday lineup.

The shows have drawn an audience of African-American women put off by more youth-focused programming on networks like BET. OWN's audience is roughly one-third black.

OWN recently reached a deal to develop scripted programming with Tyler Perry, the creative force behind movies like "Madea's Family Reunion" and the TBS series "Tyler Perry's House of Payne."

Winfrey was known for attracting stars and confessions on her syndicated show ? remember Tom Cruise's couch jump? And even before landing the Armstrong interview, Winfrey has delivered the goods as an interviewer on her Sunday night show, "Oprah's Next Chapter."

Her talk with David Letterman that aired earlier this month was one of the most remarkable interviews the reticent CBS host has ever given. Besides last year's interview with the Whitney Houston family, high-rated episodes of "Oprah's Next Chapter" have featured Rihanna, Usher, Pastor Joel Osteen, the Kardashians and Steven Tyler.

The Armstrong interview aired before the usual Sunday night time slot partly because it was considered newsworthy enough to rush, but also because Winfrey had scheduled and promoted a talk with Drew Barrymore for Sunday.

Considering many viewers still have to search to find the network on their cable system, that's a particularly strong lineup for OWN. She's more competitive with the much bigger broadcast networks than could have rightly been considered.

The impact of the Armstrong interview won't be known for a while, Logan said. Winfrey has called it the biggest interview of her career and it has already drawn more attention to OWN's content than anything else so far. Removing the stench of failure in itself would be a big step.

The interview could also help OWN reach the 20 million or so cable and satellite subscribers across the country that currently don't have it on their systems, Adgate said.

"They'll be calling their cable operators and saying, 'How come I'm not getting this?'" he said.

Ban Apologizes For Serbian Military Song As Concert Encore

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon?has apologized for a performance at the international organization of a Serbian military song, which? activists say is associated with massacres in Bosnia in the 1990s.

Ban's spokesman Martin Nesirky said on January 17 that the song -- Mars na Drinu (March on the River Drina) -- had been played as an encore in a concert at the UN General Assembly on January 14 and had not been listed in the official program.

Nesirky told reporters, "We sincerely regret that people were offended by this song."

He said Ban was not aware of how the song had been used in the past. The Congress of North American Bosniaks, The Institute for Research of Genocide Canada, and other groups complained about the song in a letter to Ban.

Manchester youngsters learn about hate crime as awareness week ...

Manchester youngsters will find out about hate crime during a special event next week as part of a series of events being held to raise awareness of the problem.

Pupils from Manchester Communications Academy in Harpurhey will watch a special play written and performed by members of theatre group Exceeding Expectations to help them understand what hate crime is, who can be affected by it and how they can report it.

The event, held on Monday January 21, is being held to launch a hate crime awareness week organised by Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Police.

Earlier in the day, people from a wide range of organisations across the city, including faith groups, disability groups and those representing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, attended a launch event at Manchester Town Hall to launch the city?s new hate crime strategy.

This outlines how the City Council, together with Greater Manchester Police, the Crown Prosecution Service and other agencies will work with residents across the city to tackle the issue, and follows a consultation event last summer in which partners and residents were invited to talk about their experiences.

The strategy includes measures such as increasing reporting of hate crime incidents, taking effective action against perpetrators, making sure the agencies involved work more closely together, providing proper support to victims and preventing hate crime by educating people and working to change attitudes.

Meanwhile, residents? groups across the city will also hold dozens of events throughout hate crime awareness week to help their neighbours understand the issue.

The events, which have been supported by the City Council, include:

The Whalley Range based Community On Solid Ground project, which provides activities to encourage young people to get back into work, education or training, is holding an event on 26 January aimed at raising awareness of hate crime among young people.

Manchester street pastors will be going out in Rusholme on 25 January to hand out information to members of the public about hate crime and how to report it.

The Mancunian Way charity will hold a ?shimmer and shine? beauty event to raise awareness of hate crime among young women in Gorton.

Groups of students from across south Manchester will hold events throughout the week.

The Challenging Hate Forum will hold a public event at Manchester Cathedral on 22 January.

Information about hate crime and how to report it will be given out to members of the public during an event at Longsight library on 23 January.

Abraham Moss and King David High School will hold the first of a series of events which will include visiting victims of the Holocaust and atrocities in Rwanda and Kosovo.

An event has been organised by the Indian senior citizens centre in Longsight.

The city centre?s Lesbian and Gay Foundation will hold an event encouraging people to report homophobic hate crime.

Councillor Bernard Priest, Manchester City Council?s executive member for neighbourhood services, said: "We are determined to make sure that hate crime will not be tolerated in Manchester, but for us to deal effectively with this issue, it?s vital we work closely with residents to make sure they understand what hate crime is and change their perceptions towards people who from other groups.

"We?ve tapped into the city?s famous community spirit and Manchester should be proud that a wide range of different groups from across the city have come on board to join us in the fight against hate crime. It?s also vital that young people know about hate crime and so the play being held at the Manchester Communications Academy is an excellent opportunity to get the message across to them."

Greater Manchester Police Assistant Chief Constable, Garry Shewan, said: ?Hate crime is something that can ruin the lives of many, it could be happening right under our noses where those closest to us could be living in fear and not even know that they are a victim of crime.

?This awareness week is about showing the people of Manchester that we are working together with Manchester City Council, the CPS and our local partners to put a stop to hate crime but also to open people?s eyes to the problem and ask them to challenge it, speak up and encourage victims to report it.

?Every individual has a right to feel safe and secure in their surroundings, free from hostility and harassment. If this isn?t the case than it needs to stop and we won?t tolerate it. If it's happening to you, speak to someone and get the help you need so we can bring offenders to justice.??

Tony Lloyd, Greater Manchester Tony Lloyd, Greater Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner, said: "Hate crime is a blight on our society. No-one should be a victim of crime simply because of who they are.

?This kind of work is incredibly important as it helps people understand what hate crime is and shows that police and other agencies will listen to the diverse communities affected and take it seriously. By standing together we can stamp it out for good."

Anyone who wants to report hate crime should call 101 or 08000 83007, or alternatively report it online at www.report-it.org.uk.

Android Game Review ? Cells Pro-Game Of Life

Those of you who never really got into the complicated mechanisms of cell division in biology class now get the chance to create their own dynamics with ?Cells Pro-Game Of Life?. The indie developer Nikita Makarov created a game which allows you to execute almost divine powers: your task is to bring small cells to life by tapping on the screen and placing them strategically on an agars. There are several rules to consider, which are explained in a rather detailed tutorial. The game offers five different game modes, for example you can create your own levels in the sandbox mode and play with some of your friends in the multiplayer mode.

The gaming experience is limited by the lack of musical variation in the background and there are also no sound effects which could breathe some life into the swarming cells. The graphics make the game look quite retro, which isn?t a bad thing, but again, it would have been nice if the sounds had enhanced that impression.

To sum up there is to say that ?Cells Pro-Game Of Life? is a nice, kind of retro-themed,?puzzle game with simple rules. Thanks to the swarming cells, the gameplay is quite dynamic and it keeps you entertained for a little while.

Hubble image: The galaxy puzzle in the constellation of Centaurus

Jan. 7, 2013 ? The Universe loves to fool our eyes, giving the impression that celestial objects are located at the same distance from Earth. A good example can be seen in a new spectacular image produced by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The galaxies NGC 5011B and NGC 5011C are imaged against a starry background.

Located in the constellation of Centaurus, the nature of these galaxies has puzzled astronomers. NGC 5011B (on the right) is a spiral galaxy belonging to the Centaurus Cluster of galaxies lying 156 million light-years away from Earth. Long considered part of the faraway cluster of galaxies as well, NGC 5011C (the bluish galaxy at the center of the image) is a peculiar object, with the faintness typical of a nearby dwarf galaxy, and the size of an early-type spiral.

Astronomers were curious about the appearance of NGC 5011C. If the two galaxies were at roughly the same distance from Earth, they would expect the pair to show signs of interactions between them. However, there was no visual sign of interaction between the two. How could this be possible?

To solve this problem, astronomers studied the velocity at which these galaxies are receding from the Milky Way and found that NGC 5011C is moving away far more slowly than its apparent neighbor, and its motion is more consistent with that of the nearby Centaurus A group at a distance of 13 million light-years. Thus, NGC 5011C, with only about ten million times the mass of the sun in its stars, must indeed be a nearby dwarf galaxy rather than a member of the distant Centaurus Cluster as was believed for many years.

Problem solved.

This image was taken with Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys using visual and infrared filters.

(AP) ? Congress made the obvious official on Friday. President Barack Obama has been re-elected.

In a joint session, Congress formally certified that Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were the winners in the November election with 332 electoral votes, well more than the 270 required. Republican Mitt Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, won 206 votes.

It's a mostly ceremonial ? yet constitutionally necessary ? vote that's mostly intriguing to political junkies and policy wonks. The count Friday lacked the suspense of the drawn-out campaign and election but was steeped in tradition.

Biden and about a dozen senators trekked across the Capitol from the Senate to the House chamber, and the vice president joined House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, on the rostrum. Senate pages carried two dark wooden boxes that contained the results of the electoral votes that had been counted in the state capitals last month. Clerks used silver letter openers to unseal the envelopes.

Taking turns, the leaders of the Senate Rules Committee ? Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn. ? and the top members of the House Administration Committee ? Reps. Candice Miller, R-Mich., and Robert Brady, D-Pa. ? read the results from each state. Biden, who presided over the session, announced the final results to applause from the scattering of House and Senate members in the chamber.

The 12th Amendment directs the electors chosen by the states to meet and vote for president and vice president. Each state gets its equivalent in the 435-member House and the 100-member Senate. The District of Columbia gets the other three electors. Their certified tally sheets must be counted in Washington.

The low-key session was in sharp contrast to the drama in January 2001, when Vice President Al Gore, the loser in the disputed election, presided over the certification of an electoral count that gave the presidency to his rival, Republican George W. Bush. Gore had beaten Bush in the popular vote but lost the electoral count.

Months after the November election, the final official vote from all 50 states and the District of Columbia showed Obama with 65,899,660 votes, or 51.1 percent, and Romney with 60,932,152 votes, or 47.2 percent. Obama is the first president since Republican Dwight Eisenhower to win back-to-back presidential elections with more than 51 percent of the popular vote.

Chief Justice John Roberts will swear in Obama at noon on Jan. 20 at the White House in a private ceremony, and then administer the oath again on the West Front of the Capitol the next day. The Constitution requires that the inauguration take place on Jan. 20 but because it is a Sunday, the public session and the accompanying parade and festivities will occur on Monday.

Biden has asked Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to swear him in for a second term. She will be the first Hispanic to administer either a presidential or vice presidential oath.
