Draft Dodgers

At the time, the military said it was losing 13 percent of its potential draftees because of ultra-Orthodox exemptions and that the number was expected to increase to 20 percent by 2020 because of the higher birth rate in that population. Israeli Arabs, who make up 20 percent of the overall population, also do not serve, creating similar calls for some kind of national service. ``Right now we have a problem because we lack soldiers,?? Brig. Gen. Amir Rogovski, head of personnel planning in the IDF?s manpower branch, told me at the time. ``When you see the forecast for 2020, it?s going to be much worse.??

Vitamin E may lower liver cancer risk

ScienceDaily (July 18, 2012) ? High consumption of vitamin E either from diet or vitamin supplements may lower the risk of liver cancer, according to a study published July 17 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin which is considered an antioxidant and numerous experimental studies have suggested that vitamin E may prevent DNA damage.

Liver cancer is the third most common cause of cancer mortality in the world, the fifth most common cancer found in men and the seventh most common in women. Approximately 85 percent of liver cancers occur in developing nations, with 54 percent in China alone.

To determine the relationship between vitamin E intake and liver cancer risk, Wei Zhang, M.D., MPH., Shanghai Cancer Institute, Renji Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, and colleagues analyzed data from a total of 132,837 individuals in China who were enrolled in the Shanghai Women?s Health Study (SWHS) from 1997-2000 or the Shanghai Men?s Health Study (SMHS) from 2002-2006, two population-based cohort studies jointly conducted by the Shanghai Cancer Institute and Vanderbilt University.

Using validated food-frequency questionnaires, the researchers conducted in-person interviews to gather data on study participants? dietary habits. Participants were asked how often they ate some of the most commonly consumed foods in urban Shanghai and whether they took vitamin supplements.

The investigators then compared liver cancer risk among participants who had high intake of vitamin E with those who had low intake.

The analysis included 267 liver cancer patients (118 women and 149 men) who were diagnosed between two years after study enrollment and an average of 10.9 (SWHS) or 5.5 (SMHS) years of follow-up. Vitamin E intake from diet and vitamin E supplement use were both associated with a lower risk of liver cancer. This association was consistent among participants with and without self-reported liver disease or a family history of liver cancer.

?We found a clear, inverse dose-response relation between vitamin E intake and liver cancer risk,? the authors write, noting a small difference between men and women in the risk estimate, which is likely attributable to fewer liver cancer cases having occurred among male participants due to the shorter follow-up period.

?Overall, the take home message is that high intake of vitamin E either from diet or supplements was related to lower risk of liver cancer in middle-aged or older people from China,? said Xiao Ou Shu, M.D., Ph.D., professor of Medicine at the Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center.

Conversely, participants who had the highest vitamin C intake from supplements and who had a family history of liver cancer or self-reported liver disease were more likely to develop liver cancer. There was no link to liver cancer among participants who had the highest levels of vitamin C or other vitamins from food.

Other investigators involved with the study included Honglan Li, M.D., M.Ph., Jing Gao, M.D., Yong-Bing Xiang, M.D., M.Ph., and Yu-Tang Gao, M.D., Shanghai Cancer Institute; Gong Yang, M.D., MPH, Hui Cai, M.D., Ph.D., and Wei Zheng, M.D., Ph.D., Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center; and Bu-Tian Ji, M.D., Dr.PH, National Cancer Institute.

Funding for the study was supported by grants from the National Cancer Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health (R37 CA070867 and R01 CA082729), the State Key Project Specialized for Infectious Diseases of China (2008ZX10002-015 and 2012ZX10002008-002), and a training grant from the Fogarty International Center (D43 TW008313).

Harris Corporation Delivers First Operational Voice over IP Air ...

MELBOURNE, Fla.--Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, has delivered the first operational Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) radio control capability into the National Airspace System (NAS). VoIP is an essential enabler of the agency's evolution toward NextGen, a wide-ranging transformation of the entire U.S. air transport system.
?The FAA selected the Liberty RCE for this mission because it addressed an immediate need for critical ATC communications in a remote and challenging environment?
The Harris Liberty Radio Control Equipment (RCE) is operational at the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA's) Air Route Traffic Control Center in Houston, which provides air/ground radio communications for the Gulf of Mexico, including remote oil platforms.

Liberty RCE can emulate virtually any radio link and offers radio control over a variety of transmission mediums, making it ideal for communications to isolated areas where digital services compatible with satellite communications are sparse, and reliance on legacy links and older analog technology is often the norm.

Liberty RCE was selected as an interim solution after the FAA encountered technical issues operating legacy RCE while deploying a remote air/ground communications facility on the oil platform Independence Hub in the Gulf of Mexico.

?The FAA selected the Liberty RCE for this mission because it addressed an immediate need for critical ATC communications in a remote and challenging environment,? said John O'Sullivan, vice president, Mission Critical Networks, Harris Government Communications Systems. "Liberty RCE's flexibility enabled us to solve a technical issue that was encumbering our customer and reflects our continued commitment to providing the FAA with innovative solutions for their unique challenges.?

Liberty RCE is a Commercial off the Shelf gateway product that provides remote radio control over a variety of transmission mediums, including analog, T-1/E-1 and Ethernet/IP. It was designed to multiplex voice and data signals transmitted between ATC facilities and local or remote radios over standard telecommunications links. Liberty RCE can be used with any voice communication and control system, and with all ATM radios. This gateway provides interfaces for digital voice, legacy analog voice, SatCom, datalink, ADS-B, TIS-B, FIS-B, and other data services.

Harris has a long history of developing and integrating system solutions for the FAA in support of the NAS. The company is the prime contractor for the FTI program, which provides critical voice, data and video communications for NAS operations and mission support functions. FTI securely connects more than 4,300 national and international FAA and DoD facilities, manages over 26,000 services, and supports more than 50,000 users. Other FAA programs developed by Harris include:
  • The Weather and Radar Processor, which provides weather information to air traffic controllers in the en-route air traffic control environment;
  • OASIS, which provides integrated weather briefing and flight planning capabilities for preflight weather briefings and in-flight updates;
  • Voice Switching and Control System, which provides the critical air-to-ground communications links between en-route aircraft and air traffic controllers throughout the continental U.S.; and
  • Alaskan Satellite Telecommunications Infrastructure program, which provides voice and data communications between the Alaskan Air Route Traffic Control Center in Anchorage and 64 regional FAA sites.
About Harris Corporation

Harris is an international communications and information technology company serving government and commercial markets in more than 150 countries. Headquartered in Melbourne, Florida, the company has approximately $6 billion of annual revenue and about 17,000 employees ? including nearly 7,000 engineers and scientists. Harris is dedicated to developing best-in-class assured communications? products, systems, and services. Additional information about Harris Corporation is available at www.harris.com.

X-Men Saga l 3 parts

I have an idea for an X-Men Saga Roleplay that won't require many characters - Just about eight.

It's going to be broken into three different parts/RolePlays.
The first one will focus on the characters as students or graduates of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. During this portion of the RolePlay, your characters will be expected to deal with a number of things.

  • Just discovering they are mutant or they've been at Xavier's for some time and they're still coping or they've accepted and embraced it and are just trying to graduate.
  • If they've already graduated - they'll be Teacher's Aides or Teachers and expected to help out with the newer and younger mutants.
  • Brink of Mutant vs. Human Civil War.
  • Typical teenage drama.
  • School.
  • And the general being a social pariah among humans.

There won't be quite as much action as there will be drama and romance in the first part, though of course there's going to be action at the end.
If I can get enough interests for this and a good cast, then I'll be sure to start working on the second 'book'.Image

?I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.?

China Third Country To Be Hit By 'Brown Tide'

There's a fascinating story with Greenpeace and GM corn. The folks making the GM corn did a study where they got both their GM corn and conventional corn that was as similar as possible, and then fed both to lab rats. They weighed the rats every week, then took the rats apart after a while and assayed... everything. Organ sizes, weights, chemistries, etc. They concluded that there were no significant differences.

Greenpeace sued to get the raw data, something I think they have a right to (since that study was used as the basis for approval). They got some folks (grad students in Germany, I think) to do their own statistics, which concluded that GM corn caused a statistically significant increase in growth rate for male rats and a statistically significant decrease for female rats. I looked at what they did, and it turns out they made a sophomoric statistics error that I teach, well, sophomore undergrads not to make.

What they did, essentially, was to neglect the fact that limited-sample-size uncertainties in "weight of rat at 6 weeks" and "weight of rat at 7 weeks" are correlated when they tested for statistical significance. Of course they're correlated -- they're the same damned rats! (In technical language, they calculated chi-squared based on the naive standard-errors-of-the-mean, rather than on the full covariance matrix which is required for [strongly] correlated data.)

If Greenpeace can't even get undergrad stats right in one of the cases where they *have* shown their work (and it's wrong) then I see no reason to give them any credibility unless someone who's better at this than they are checks their work.

My Baby weighs about 5 pounds and is close to 20 inches tall.

He is all baby in me and I can feel his little parts moving and squishing my upper rib cage all the time.

I've been getting those Braxton Hicks Contractions which aren't really pleasant.

I'm still in Maui on my third week here but we will be back home to Portland on Thursday.

I honestly don't want to go home and would stay here all summer and have this baby here in Maui.

?But I kinda have no choice and need to?fly back soon! The most important thing I am anxious and excited is nesting up my baby room, getting my baby?bag ready and just waiting patiently for this boy to come out!?Oh?and hitting up a few more of my girlfriends baby showers. Those are always fun!

I do miss my family and friends back home and I guess just getting back into REALITY.

Enough of this laziness, lying, eating, sun bathing around.

hehe ;)

Happy Monday!

Eating The Right Foods Can Make A Difference In Your Weight Loss ...

Fat Loss Workouts

You?re a well-educated person, and you know what you want out of life. And what you want right now is to lose weight. But, what is the most effective way to do it? If you?re like most people, knowing how to lose weight, and keep it off, has got you stumped. The information in this article will address those challenges that your?re facing.

A good tip to lose weight is to eat before going out with friends. After a few drinks or peer pressure, you might become tempted to give into your cravings and eat unhealthy foods. By eating beforehand you won?t have to worry about wrecking your diet, because you won?t be hungry.

If you are trying to lose weight, you should make sure that you do not confuse thirst with hunger. When you think that you are feeling hungry, drink a glass of water to see if that is what your body is truly craving. Make sure you know your body and its needs.

Try new foods. Dieting to lose weight can be more fun if your switch things up a little. There are hundreds of thousands of delicious food combinations out there. A lot of them are surprisingly healthy for you. Try some out while you are dieting to avoid getting bored.

To make it easier for you to consume more veggies, opt for the frozen kind! While it may seem healthier to go with fresh food, frozen veggies retain almost all their nutritional value. They?re also very easy to prepare, which means you?ll be snacking on things like broccoli and green beans more often.

To help you lose weight and make healthy food choices, get rid of the unhealthy choices in your life. Go ahead and throw away those junk foods that are likely to sabotage your plan. This way, they aren?t sitting there tempting you all the time and you can choose the healthier foods you bought to replace them.

Splurge on a great tasting meal made of low calorie foods every once in a while. Some foods that fall under this category include lobster, shrimp, and salmon. You will be rewarding yourself with a delicious meal while still sticking to low calorie intake. Looking forward to these meals can help you stick to your goals.

It may sound strange, but cleaning your house thoroughly once a week can help you achieve your weight loss goals. When you deep-clean your kitchen or bathroom, you burn a lot more calories than you think. A half-hour scrub session can burn up to 120 calories, and cleaning your house will take much longer than that. Your elbow grease can go a long way!

Even if you?re in a hurry or on a schedule, a good weight loss plan includes a balanced, healthy breakfast. By filling up on nutritious foods that are rich in carbs, protein, calcium, and vitamins, you set the stage for healthy eating for the entire rest of the day.

As you can see, the steps to achieve your weight loss goals are simple, effective, and very easy to implement. No matter what your daily schedule or lifestyle, you will be able to find a weight loss strategy that is right for you and your life. So what are you waiting for?

Check out our Youtube channel for more tips in addition to bodyweight exercise routines so that you can trim inches away.

He was 79. (AP Photo/Ric Feld, File)

(AP) ? Stephen R. Covey, author of "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" as well as several other books that together have sold millions of copies, has died. He was 79.

In a statement sent to employees of a Utah consulting firm Covey co-founded, his family said the writer and motivational speaker died at a hospital in Idaho Falls, Idaho, early Monday due to complications from a bicycle accident in April.

"In his final hours, he was surrounded by his loving wife and each one of his children and their spouses, just as he always wanted," the family said.

Covey was hospitalized after being knocked unconscious in the bike crash on a steep road in the foothills of Provo, Utah, about 45 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Covey, a Utah native, was considered a pioneer in the self-help genre aimed at helping readers become more productive in their lives, most notably with "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People," which sold more than 20 million copies in 38 languages.

"This was one of the first books in recent times that was really directed at prioritizing the way you worked, so you could be more effective as an individual" said Adrian Zackheim, president and publisher of Portfolio, a business imprint at Penguin Group (USA). "It wasn't about how to be a manager or how or to run a company. It was about how to conduct yourself.

"Covey's influence was very pervasive," added Zackheim, a rival publisher. "It was a book that applied to everybody. You would hear about whole organizations where everybody in the company was expected to read the book."

Covey also was the author of several other best sellers, including "First Things First," ''Principle-Centered Leadership," ''The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families," and "The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness."

Covey was the co-founder of Utah-based professional services company FranklinCovey.

At the time of his bicycle accident, his publicist, Debra Lund, said doctors had not found any signs of long-term damage to his head.

"He just lost control on his bike and crashed," Lund said. "He was wearing a helmet, which is good news."

Catherine Sagers, Covey's daughter, told The Salt Lake Tribune in April that her father had suffered some bleeding on his brain after the accident.

A telephone message left for Sagers on Monday wasn't returned.

Sean Covey said his father was at a family gathering in Montana when his health began to deteriorate and he was rushed to the closest hospital.

"Our family, all nine kids and our spouses and my mom, were able to gather together again to be with him for the last few hours of his life, which is what he always wanted," Sean Covey said in an email to The Tribune.

Google CEO Page 'Recovering,' Back in the Office

Google CEO Larry Page

Google CEO Larry Page was back at the office last week after a mystery ailment causing the loss of his speaking voice forced him to miss last month's Google I/O developer conference, according to the company's chairman Eric Schmidt.

Schmidt updated reporters with the news about Page's condition at a fireside chat with media in Sun Valley, Idaho last Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported.

It's not clear if Page has completely regained his voice, but Schmidt said, ""Larry is doing much better ... he seems fine," according to the Journal. The specific nature of Page's ailment has not been revealed.

Schmidt told shareholders in June that Page would be missing upcoming Google events, including Google I/O and the company's upcoming second-quarter earnings call on July 19. Schmidt didn't say if Page's plans regarding next Thursday's conference call with investors and analysts had changed given his apparent return to health.

Page continued to run Google the past few weeks despite his illness, Schmidt said. The 39-year-old CEO has been communicated via email and other forms of written messaging during his recovery.

Meanwhile, at the same fireside chat in Sun Valley, Schmidt talked up Google's self-driving car initiative, opining that "self-driving cars should become the predominant mode of transportation in our lifetime," according to Tech Crunch.

Commodity Investors Beware: Copper, Gold, Silver Sitting In Steep ...

Jared Cummans: When it comes to commodity trading, few words are more serious in an investor?s vocabulary than contango. This phenomenon has been known to burn a hole in positions and cause problems for those who were not amply prepared.?By definition, contango is the process whereby near month futures are cheaper than those expiring further into the future, creating an upward sloping curve for future prices over time. The reason behind this is most often attributed to storage costs; storing barrels of oil or bushels of corn isn?t cheap and the costs have to be passed down the line. Below, we outline three commodities currently exhibiting contango to help keep investors up to date on the current futures environment [see also?Jim Rogers Says: Buy Commodities Now, Or You?ll Hate Yourself Later].

Copper

Copper futures (NYSEARCA:JJC), which are among the most popular in the world, are facing a steep upward slope that refuses to let up until February of 2014. This may imply that markets are assuming a further recovery in the construction and industrial sectors of the world, but that may still be a ways off. Recent news has begun to call into question the growth of emerging nations like China and India (both of whom are major consumers of the metal) so this futures curve could get turned?on its head in a hurry.

"Nationalism will emerge. Healthier countries will not see fit to spend their hard earned money to bail out their less responsible neighbors."

Gold

Gold has long been the world?s favorite metal as it has been used as a store of value and a safe haven for quite some time. But in recent years, gold?s uses have added ?speculative instrument? to an already impressive resume. Now, many traders like to utilize gold to make bets on markets as well as action from the Fed and central banks around the world. Currently, gold futures are sitting in contango through June of 2018, as far out as they are offered. It seems that a third round of quantitative easing and historical momentum have figured in a?massive appreciation for gold?in the coming years, now the only question that is left is whether you buy in to that theory or not. Of course, if contango bothers you, the physically-backed SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEARCA:GLD) is always a good alternative.

Silver

The other precious metal, silver is often overshadowed by the performance and prevalence of gold. In reality, this white metal is a much more practical option than its precious counterpart as silver has a hefty presence in the industrial world and is also considered a safe haven investment; all at a relatively low price tag to boot. Currently, silver is faced with contango all the way through December of 2013, giving investors a year and a half to consider a position. Those too shy to dabble in futures are always welcome to try the iShares Silver Trust (NYSEARCA:SLV) which tracks physical bullion [see also?25 Ways To Invest In Silver].

Florida Voters Like Gov. Scott?s Policies ? But Not Him

Florida voters don?t like Rick Scott, but they do like his policies.
?
According to a new poll, 18 solid months of Scott?s people-friendly workday initiatives, frequent public bill signings and friendliness toward media outlets have failed to inspire much personal esteem, The Miami Herald reported.
?
Scott?s positive name recognition remains low, with 37 percent viewing him unfavorably, 30 percent neutral, and 29 percent viewing him favorably, in the poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling Research for the Herald and four other Florida news outlets.

When asked, 51 percent of likely voters disapprove of Scott's job performance, with only 40 percent approving and 9 percent not sure.

But while they don't seem to like the governor personally, they sure like his policies. By 54 percent to 35 they approve of his efforts to purge voters' lists of aliens and by 82 percent to 13 they agree that voters should show identification at the polls.

Interviews with respondents showed broad support for his policies on immigration and welfare, as well, the Herald reported.
?
"It?s a charisma gap,"? pollster Brad Coker told the Herald. "He doesn?t turn even Republican voters on the same way that [former Gov.] Jeb Bush did."

"There?s a certain stiffness to him and he doesn?t seem like a natural communicator. You can be an actor and memorize your lines ... but if you don?t come across well on camera, it doesn?t really matter. There?s just something not there."

That could be bad news for Scott. On Saturday the Tampa Bay Times reported that Democratic National Committee chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz is considering challenging him at the next election bringing the possibility of a high-profile name backed by a well-funded campaign.
?
Demographically, the poll found that women disapprove of the governor more than men ? 56 percent disapproval versus 45 ? and that one in four Republicans disapprove of Scott?s performance.
?
The poll among 800 likely voters has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.

Dogs, dead people get election docs from nonprofit

(AP) ? The voter registration form arrived in the mail last month with some key information already filled in: Rosie Charlston's name was complete, as was her Seattle address.

Problem is, Rosie was a black lab who died in 1998.

A group called the Voter Participation Center has touted the distribution of some 5 million registration forms in recent weeks, targeting Democratic-leaning voting blocs such as unmarried women, blacks, Latinos and young adults.

But residents and election administrators around the country also have reported a series of bizarre and questionable mailings addressed to animals, dead people, noncitizens and people already registered to vote.

Brenda Charlston wasn't the only person to get documents for her pet: A Virginia man said similar documents arrived for his dead dog, Mozart, while a woman in the state got forms for her cat, Scampers.

"On a serious note, I think it's tampering with our voting system," Charlston said. "They're fishing for votes: That's how I view it."

Every presidential election cycle brings with it a variety of registration drives targeting people who typically are underrepresented at the polls, and Republicans have long seized on sloppy or questionable registrations as a sign of potential fraud on the part of Democrats.

It's an issue that is particularly sensitive this year. GOP political leaders have used fears of fraud to successfully push laws across the country that could make voting more difficult by requiring voters to show identification. Democrats have fought the laws, arguing that they can disenfranchise citizens, minorities in particular.

The group at the root of the questionable mailings ? the Voter Participation Center ? acknowledges that the databases it uses to contact possible voters are imperfect because they are developed from commercially collected information. The group also says it expects people who receive misdirected mail to simply throw it away.

Several election officials said they believed the voter registration systems were secure enough to catch people who might improperly submit the misdirected documents, since registrants typically have to furnish ID and election managers use databases ? such as death records ? to see if someone should be disallowed.

But administrators in New Mexico, a potential swing state in the presidential race, warned that ineligible voters who complete the documents could make it onto the rolls.

New Mexico is one of two states in which noncitizens can qualify for a driver's license by simply proving residency ? not necessarily legal residency ? and state elections officials have no way of verifying the legal status of those who file registration documents.

Ken Ortiz, the chief of staff at the New Mexico secretary of state's office, said some noncitizens have contacted the state asking why they received the forms when they'd previously been told that they could not vote.

"We fear that some of these individuals who receive this mailing may feel that they are being encouraged to vote by our office or county government," Ortiz said.

The mailings appear official, arriving in privacy envelopes with the headline "VOTER REGISTRATION DOCUMENTS ENCLOSED." Some information is already completed on the voter registration papers, and recipients also get an envelope to send completed forms to local elections officials.

Election leaders in Florida, another major swing state, also said they were receiving complaints about applications going to dead people, noncitizens, minors and pets.

The Voter Participation Center works with a vendor that has access to multiple commercial databases that could include people who subscribe to magazines or junk mail using names of their pet, said Page Gardner, the group's president. She said the nonprofit tries its best to target only eligible and unregistered voters but that some other names inevitably get on the final list.

"Is it a perfect process? No," Gardner said. Ultimately, she said they rely on the integrity of people and the security of the system and notes that the same forms are available to anyone at county offices or on the Internet.

The Voter Participation Center says it is trying to increase participation among minorities, unmarried women and people under the age of 30, with Gardner saying that those groups have historically been underrepresented in the election process. Gardner said it has helped register 1 million people since 2004 and some 300,000 people in the current election cycle.

Election leaders in Florida, another major swing state, said they received at least 8,000 forms initiated by the center in recent weeks. They also complained about some applications going to dead people, noncitizens, minors and pets.

Formed as a nonpartisan nonprofit, the organization has worked recently to produce reports alongside the liberal Center for American Progress. IRS filings show the group ? formerly known as Women's Voices. Women Vote ? raised and spent about $5 million during 2010, the most recent year available. Individual financial supporters are not identified in the documents.

The center conducted one mailing distribution last year and another earlier this year before its biggest mailing, which went out in June. It is planning one more for later this year.

Voter registration drives of all types can create a small subset of problems. An active voter, for example, may sign up again after encountering a registration drive at an event. Some registration workers at the community activist group ACORN were accused in past years of submitting false forms with names like Mickey Mouse ? filings the group said were done by workers to increase their pay.

What makes the Voter Participation Center's work challenging is that the group is identifying voters based on data, instead of during in-person interactions. The mailings include pre-filled information that creates further confusion and concern, said Katie Blinn, a co-director of elections in Washington state.

Blinn said it appeared that many of the mailings were going to people who are already registered to vote. They have heard about a "handful" of pet-related forms in the state of the past few weeks and fielded calls from people wondering whether their registration was canceled.

Julie Anderson, the auditor in Pierce County, Wash., estimates that about two dozen residents have contacted the county about registration forms arriving for dead relatives.

Boston's energy, environment czar stepping down

Boston?s chief of environmental and energy services, James W. Hunt III, will step down from his position at the end of the month to pursue new career opportunities in the private sector.

?Making this decision was not an easy one for me, for I truly love my job and appreciate the incredibly powerful opportunity Mayor (Thomas M.) Menino entrusted in me to help grow a more sustainable, livable and prosperous Boston,? Hunt said in a letter to colleagues.

Hunt held the position of Menino?s environmental chief for seven years. Hunt was previously assistant secretary for the state?s Executive Office of Environmental Affairs. He unsuccessfully ran for Dorchester state representative in 1997.

In his letter, Hunt said the Hub continues to be on ?the cutting edge of building a 21st century sustainable city that works for all our people,? thanks to energy efficiency partnerships, historic preservation projects, improvements in Boston Harbor and the Islands, and expansion of community gardens and urban food systems.

?While making this decision was difficult for me, I leave knowing that Boston is on course to reach even greater heights under (Menino?s) continued leadership and with the incredibly strong team behind him,? Hunt said.

Will Penn State tell all in internal report?

Louis Freeh, the former director of FBI, is expected to release his findings of an internal investigation in to the sex-abuse scandal that rocked Penn State University. And, as NBC's Michael Isikoff notes, the report is expected to be scathing.

Jay Paterno, the son of legendary Penn State coach Joe Paterno, says that his family is awaiting the release of former FBI director Louis Freeh's "thorough report" into the sex scandal and possible cover-up at the university.

Penn State's internal report on the scandal surrounding former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky's sexual abuse of young boys?will be released today at 9 a.m. ET.

Watch this space for updates throughout the day from msnbc.com and NBC News staff, who are in Philadelphia and State College, Pa., for the release.

NBC correspondent Michael Isikoff, in Philadelphia, reported that the Freeh investigation is expected to be "scathing," with some blame falling on the culture of college football.

The report may affect the reputation of legendary coach Joe Paterno, who died soon after the Sandusky allegations became public, as well as the university's standing with the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which so far has not announced any punishments of Penn State.

On NBC's TODAY show on Thursday morning, the coach's son, Jay Paterno, told host Matt Lauer that all the family has wanted is for an investigation to find the truth. "We have never ever at any time been afraid to see what people have had to say," and he called the Freeh report "one opinion, one piece of the puzzle." "We've never been afraid of the truth, so let's have the truth come out and let's go from there."

The investigation is billed by Penn State as "independent," though the university is paying the law firm of Louis Freeh, the former federal judge and director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, for the report. Freeh's law firm in Philadelphia says it will post the report at 9 a.m., with a news conference to follow an hour later.

Sandusky, 68, was found guilty of 45 counts of child sexual abuse last month and is currently in prison awaiting sentencing. He faces a maximum sentence of more than 400 years in prison.

Freeh was hired by the university in November to review the school's dealings with Sandusky and its response to a 2001 report that he sexually abused a boy in a Penn State shower room, an incident witnessed by football assistant Michael McQueary.

How will Penn State's "independent report" affect the reputation of its much-beloved former football coach, Joe Paterno, who died after the scandal broke?

Former Penn State President Graham Spanier has come under particular scrutiny in recent weeks amid news reports suggesting he was made aware of suspicious activity involving Sandusky in 2001 and that no report of the incident was made to authorities.

Citing emails obtained by Freeh?s investigators, CNN reported last week that Spanier and two other university officials ? Gary Schultz, the former senior vice president of finance and business, and Tim Curley, the athletic director on administrative leave ? agreed to take a "humane" approach in dealing with Sandusky following his alleged sexual encounter with a boy.

Instead of reporting the incident to police, according to CNN's report, administrators planned to ask Sandusky to seek counseling and said they would tell officials at the Second Mile, the charity he founded and where he met many of the children he would later abuse, about their concerns.

"At no time in the more than 16 years of his presidency at Penn State was Dr. Spanier told of an incident involving Jerry Sandusky that described child abuse, sexual misconduct or criminality of any kind, and he reiterated that during his interview with Louis Freeh and his colleagues,'' Spanier's attorneys, Peter Vaira and Elizabeth Ainslie, said in a written statement.

In addition, Freeh?s report is expected to include information about the actions of former head football coach Paterno after McQueary?s allegations. Paterno, a legend in college football, died of lung cancer in January at 85.

Gary Cameron / Reuters file

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh was hired in November to determine whether Penn State University officials knew about child sex abuse allegations against former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

In a statement Tuesday, Paterno's family pushed back against the leak of emails to CNN, including one in which Curley stated, "After giving it more thought, and talking it over with Joe yesterday - I am uncomfortable with what we agreed were the next steps."

"The media spin that this is proof of some sort of cover up is completely false," the statment said. "When the facts come out, it will be clear that Joe Paterno never gave Tim Curley any instructions to protect Sandusky or limit any investigation of his actions.

"Joe Paterno did not cover up for Jerry Sandusky. Joe Paterno did not know that Jerry Sandusky was a pedophile. Joe Paterno did not act in any way to prevent a proper investigation of Jerry Sandusky. To claim otherwise is a distortion of the truth."

The Sandusky scandal led to the ouster of Spanier and Paterno and charges against Curley, who is on leave from the university, and Schultz, who has since retired. The latter two are accused of perjury for their grand jury testimony and failing to properly report suspected child abuse.

Spanier hasn't been charged. He remains a tenured professor of sociology at Penn State. He has sued the university to gain access to internal emails that his attorneys say will exonerate him.

On Wednesday, the Paterno family released a letter written six months earlier by Paterno, saying, "This is not a football scandal."

A statue of Paterno remains outside Penn State's 106,000-seat Beaver Stadium.

Not so happy: King penguins stressed by human presence

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

King penguins tolerate some, but not all, human interference. Research published in BioMed Central's open access journal, BMC Ecology, investigates the adjustment of a king penguin colony on the protected Possession island in the subantarctic Crozet Archipelago to over 50 years of constant human disturbance.

A team of researchers from the University of Strasbourg, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the University of Lausanne, compared 15 king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) breeding in areas disturbed daily by humans and 18 penguins breeding in undisturbed areas. All penguins selected were brooding a chick aged from 2 days to 1 month.

Using heart rate to indicate the stress level of each penguin, they compared the stress response of penguins from the different areas to three stressors. Two low intensity stressors, a human approach to 10 meters and a loud noise, mimicked the actions of tourists, researchers, and noises from machines when operating on the outskirts of the colony. One high intensity stressor, a capture, simulated researchers taking measurements.

Compared with penguins from undisturbed areas, penguins from areas of high human disturbance were less stressed by noise and approaching humans, but following capture, their maximum relative heart rate increased 42% although they then recovered faster.

"Our findings report a case of physiological adjustment to human presence in a long-studied king penguin colony, and emphasize the importance of considering potential effects of human presence in ecological studies", said lead author Vincent Viblanc.

Penguins 'getting used to' people may be beneficial to scientific research and tourist management. However, this study also raises the question of the potential influence of human activities on the selection of specific phenotypes. For example the progressive desertion of disturbed areas by more stress-sensitive individuals. For scientists studying animals in their native habitat, it also underlines the importance of physiological studies in interpreting results before conservation measures are implemented.

Evaluating the impact of humans on protected wildlife such as the king penguins is particularly important given the rise in popularity of Antarctic tour groups. Dr Viblanc said, "A central question for ecologists is the extent to which anthropogenic disturbances (e.g. tourism) might impact wildlife and affect the systems under study". He continued "One of the major pitfalls of such research is in forgetting that, from the perspective of the wildlife studied, tourism and scientific research are not two worlds apart."

Selig and Weiner concerned over Cano booing

American League's Robinson Cano, of the New York Yankees, swings during the MLB All-Star baseball Home Run Derby, Monday, July 9, 2012, in Kansas City, Mo. (AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

(AP) ? Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig and union head Michael Weiner expressed disappointment that the Yankees' Robinson Cano was booed repeatedly by fans at the All-Star Home Run Derby after bypassing Billy Butler of the hometown Kansas City Royals.

Robinson, the AL captain for the derby, picked Detroit's Prince Fielder, Toronto's Jose Bautista and the Los Angeles Angels' Mark Trumbo for Monday night's event, which Fielder won.

"Robinson Cano certainly picked people he thought should be on there," Selig told the Baseball Writers' Association of American on Tuesday. "While I understand Kansas City and I understand the whole Billy Butler thing, I really felt very badly last night."

Weiner thought the level of jeering was not justified.

"It struck me that it moved a little bit past traditional good-natured booing, particularly for an event like that , and got into another area," he said. "But Robinson Cano grew up in the Dominican Republic, plays in the Bronx, plays for the Yankees. He's going to be fine."

Next year's All-Star game will be hosted by the New York Mets at Citi Field. Selig isn't concerned about fan reaction there if David Wright or another Mets star isn't included.

"It won't be any worse than it was last night," he said. "You can only boo so loud."
